Within the last week, some friends of mine, in their 80's became victims of a scam. They subsequently lost quite a large sum of money.
After reporting their situation to the local authorities, who were very cooperative and listened to their entire story, my friends were told that they would probably never regain the money.
The law enforcement official told them about how these scams work, including known countries of origin, and many known facts about the scamming operations. They were also told that many similar cases of scamming are reported EACH week.
I feel horribly that this has happened to my friends. They are both highly intelligent people, whose hearts were pulled at through the scam, which sent everything that they had ever heard about scams right out the window.
I am outraged and perplexed as to why, if there is so much information as to the origin and elaborate schematics of these villians, why, why, WHY can nothing be done?
Can we not put something in place to protect the innocents' whose life savings are stolen? Can we not creat or enforce some sort of law that would eliminate the existence of these scams and those that live by them?
We need to not only put a story out there once in a while... BUT CONSTANTLY!!
A simple Bold warning in the newspaper (front page) every day, would not cost the publishers any extra money.
A short, yet compelling public service 'commercial' several times a day on every TV station. A notice on the local phone books. Are but only a few ideas.
We NEED to help our fellow citizens be CONSTANTLY AWARE of the devious nature of these pirates. They will stop only if we refuse to fall prey to their elaborate, maliscious schemes.
