Whirlpool/Admiral/Maytag Complaint

Whirlpool - LIVING UP TO THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD - Admiral Refrigerator

- Jacksonville, FL
whirl·pool
–noun 1. water in swift, circular motion, as that produced by the MEETING OF OPPOSING CURRENTS, OFTEN CAUSING A DOWNWARD SPIRALING ACTION.

Here's the story I already submitted to Consumer Affairs. I didn't know if they automatically distribute it to the news stations so I thought I would send it through here as well.

I bought an Admiral Refrigerator in June 2005. Under the initial 12 month Mfg. Warranty, I had 3 separate service calls for the same problem within the 1st year of having the product. Maytag (I think now owned by Whirlpool) serviced the problem but never offered to replace the unit considering the continuing problem. After my 12-month Mfg. Warranty ran out, I bought a 4-year extended warranty from GE June/July 2006. I have had 4-5 service calls between then and now (June 2008) for the same problem I had the 1st year I had the product. Each time they repaired it by different means (replaced seal/gasket, adjusted doors, etc.) basically troubleshooting the problem each time. GE has covered the service, however, the last time the repairman was out he called Maytag/Whirlpool to explain the problem had been occurring since I bought it and told them all the times they had repaired it and they ended up deeming it "unrepairable". Consumer Refrigeration (the service co.)described to Whirlpool that the problem was a "bent frame/square". When GE (the Service Contract co.) was notified, they deemed it to be a "Manufacture's Defect" and would not exchange the unit under my Service Contract as they said this is not covered. I went back to Whirlpool/Maytag to see if they would replace it since it was their unit and they said they would not because it's been more than 2 years since I bought it. I have 3 pages of notes where I have been on the phone with GE, Maytag/Whirlpool and my service company (Consumer Refrigeration/Jax, FL) over the past 3 weeks trying to get someone to help me fix or replace this refrigerator. As of this morning, all parties have advised they will not be able to help me. GE said they will not let me place a service call since it's been deemed "unrepairable". They said I can cancel my Service Contract (even though I still have 2 years left) but won't get any money back since I've spent more on service calls than the pro-rated amount left on my 4 year contract. They also said I cannot transfer the Service Contract if I get a new refrigerator. Consumer Refrigeration doesn't want to service it because they will not get paid by the GE Service Contract. Whirlpool/Maytag said they would consider a Good Will Gesture and offer to cover 15% of the purchase of a new refrigerator. This is not acceptable to me considering the aggravation and frustration I've had over the last 3 years since I bought this refrigerator. I feel it needs to be replaced because it was apparently defective when I bought it. I am a single mom and do not have the money to purchase a new refrigerator and do not feel I should have to.

I have had to throw out food that was ruined by the refrigerator because the unit does not freeze properly in the freezer and does not cool properly in the refrigerator. For example, right now, I have frozen strawberries in my refrigerator...and frozen yogurt that is not supposed to be frozen...eggs that freeze & crack open by themselves...ice shavings in my sour cream...frozen bottles of water. I have condensation dripping from the roof of the refrigerator...the freezer gets icicles that hang from the inside and the door. Food is freezer burned long before it should be. When the light stayed on in the fridge because the seal or door was not closing properly, it burned food that was lying on the top shelf. I have had to take time off from work to meet the servicing company at my house when I placed service calls. I am aggravated, frustrated and am stressed out by this whole ordeal. I feel I am being treated unfairly in this situation and no one wants to accept responsibility for something that I had nothing to do with or no control over. I would truly appreciate any assistance or advice you can offer me.

Thank you.
