My 20 year old son purchased some "free" dietary supplements from an infomercial. He used his Capital One credit card to pay for the shipping.
Because he failed to fully read the fine print, he was signed up for two travel services, and supplemental health insurance from three different companies who charged hundreds of dollars on his credit card over a 6 month period. This was after he was contacted by the health insurance company and he declined their services.
He reported this matter to Capital One's fraud department, apparently located in India who allegedly investigated this matter and declined to assist, as my son had done business with one of the three companies in question. They initially stated the account was closed, but later refused to cancel his card and accepted continuing charges, stating the card could not be canceled until the balance was paid in full. After numerous hours on the phone with Capital One, they finally closed the account, and reversed some of the late charges asessed. This was after my son swallowed his pride and finally asked his Dad to assist.
To date, none of the charges have been credited, or reimbursed by these companies. All have refused to assist over the phone, and requested written requests for reimbursement.
What makes this story somewhat unique is this is a young man who is really trying to use credit responsibly, and maintain a good credit standing. So many his age just think it is OK to charge and not pay the bill. It is just so sad to see him victimized by credit card companies, and insurance companies. I guess this is the sign of the times, and not that unique after all. Perhaps if more people took a stand against these kind of business practices, our country would not be in the financial mess we are currently in.
