I am a 64 year old, African American Female, and my complaint is against Vision Center. They are advertised as a Vision Eyecare Center located only in Walmart Stores. Before making an appointment I researched them on the internet to make sure they accepted my insurance. The advertisement I saw stated that they took almost all insurance, including state insurance (I have Medical). I set up an an appointment for an eye exam for, April 29, 2011, at 2:00 pm. When I showed up for the appointment I was told they did not accept my insurance March Vision Care (which is through Alameda Alliance. After leaving the office, I called March Vision Care, and they reiterated that Vision Center was listed as a provider under my plan. I went back again and asked for a manager, who told me her name was Dulce (she refused to give me her last name). The Doctor who services the office is named Henry Kim, but he did not speak to me. She told me that I should go to Sears in Oakland, as they do not have a contract with my insurer (I am African American). I asked her if the Sears in Hayward accepted my insurance, and she said she sends people to Oakland. I know that Sears has a vision center in Hayward, and had a feeling she was directing me to Oakland because I am African American. She told me that they had called the insurer and told them to stop sending customers. However, if you have a contract it would seem that you would write them, and not call. I called the 800 number on the Vision Care Card and no one responded. I totally believe that this woman was treating me different because I am African American. There was a white woman there and their attitude towards her was totally different.
When I arrived in the Office the clerk gave me a form to fill out, so I was there a good twenty minutes, before she said my insurance was not acceptable. This was twenty minutes after my scheduled appointment. I am on a fixed income and had to travel over ten miles to get there. This is why I want to lodge a complaint against Vision Center and Walmart.
