I signed up for a home phone in January 2008 with Vonage. I was told it was free activation and free modem. I still ended up paying $50 somehow, but I got my first month free and I have 60 days to cancel if I am not happy. It took over a week for the modem to arrive so even though I got a month free, I only had a little over a couple of weeks to try out the service. I have a cell phone too so the home phone didn't get much use. I tried to cancel after the first month because I was getting static. Vonage said they could fix it and did some stuff, but I continued to call and cancel as well as fix it. Before my 60 days were up, I called to cancel because we never used it and there was still static on the line. I repeatedly asked her to cancel. She offered a month free and I refused telling her I didn't want the service. After an hour, she offered two months free and I was working and wanted to get off the phone. Little did I know that I was going to be wrapped into my contract. They do state they have a $40 disconnection fee. I am willing to pay that, but they are charging me for my "free modem" which I have offered to send back multiple times. I have spoken with the executive management team several times to work this out, but they say that they can only give me half off making me pay $65 because the modem was $80 and disconnection was $40. They now say the static wasn't a Vonage issue and that is why I must pay. If I would have been told that the first time I called, I wouldn't have continued to call to fix it. I would have demanded a cancellation. I felt I was deceived into this contract and I was even willing to pay for disconnection. I am not willing to pay for the modem that was given to me free and I am willing to send back since it's only a few months old and barely used. I have tried to resolve this with them directly, but to no avail. Your help would be appreciated.
