Please consider my story.
TRUE STORY - US Bank took advantage of another trusting, hard working, person of limited means. To date, US Bank has charged me over $120.00 in fees. They moved $25.00 from my savings to checking and charged a $5.00 fee to do so. My meager account had only $4.48 left to cover the $5.00 fee, therefore, a $7.00 fee continues to accrue daily over .52 cents.
Upon discovery, I immediately called my US Bank branch believing they would be reasonable. I was happy to be connected to the personal banker who opened my account. I explained and asked that the fees be waived as the .52-cent overdraft generated from a fee THEY charged and not due to negligence. He turned on me instantly and said that it didn't matter how the fee was assessed or how little the overdraft was because it is an overdraft subject to their fees. Although stunned, I pleaded with him to waive the fees, but it bore no affect. I told him that I have no money to deposit, but I could stop by the bank with .52 cents. He coldly said, "You MUST know SOMEONE from whom you can borrow money." I told him this was outrageous. However, he did advise that they "charge off" accounts after they are past due 45 days. This equals $315.00 over .52 cents. I pleaded for compassion, but he replied, “You agreed to this when you opened the account.” Devastated and defeated, I slowly disconnected the call.
Now I know what it feels like to be raped by a giant; the extreme helplessness, the humiliation of begging to no avail, the terror of being held hostage and the hopelessness of no allies, remains with me. Who is it that allows the United States banking system to commit administrative terrorism? Is stealing no longer wrong, but encouraged? Does our government (or anyone) really care about a small, working class taxpayer being subjected to the equivalent of white-collar crime? If yes, then who? If not, I believe the time has come to embrace a modern day Robin Hood and an old-fashioned coffee can.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
