UPS Loses Jewlry refuses to talk to owner - Lost Items shipped to me

I finally got my x- boyfriend to send my jewelry back to me. He chose to throw it in a UPS envelope. The jewelry came out of the envelope or was taken out. UPS sent someone to get the envelope from me but will not talk to me about it. They will only talk to the sender. I have tried numerous times to get them to understand that the X has no idea of the items worth and if they send him a check he will probably cash it and go on his merry way. I have the original sales slip for the ring and can provide a copy of what the bracelet looked like. The ring was a gold man's ring with a 1.54 diamond in it. Quite pricy by today's standards. This jewelry belonged to my deceased husband and I want it back. I can not get a response of any kind out of UPS. Only that they can not discuss it with me, only my X. I need the help of someone. I am on social security and on a fixed income. I can not afford an attorney to fight them over this. Can you please help? I worked for an insurance company for 30 years. There should still be a standard of "good faith and fair dealing" where this is concerned. I will thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
