I went to a local Westerly Rhode Island UPS store to send a package to my daughter, in Shelton, Washington. I paid for 2 day air $42.00 on December 22, 2008 this meant the package would be delivered approximately Dec 24th, 2008 in time for Christmas. Here is UPS’s own tracking information:

According to their tracking this package was delivered by truck from Westerly to Warwick RI approximately 39.2 miles, driven to Windsor Locks CT approximately 110.3 miles, flown to East Boston approximately 106.5 miles, flown to Philadelphia approximately 310.92 miles, flown to Oakland CA approximately 2872.66 miles, flown to Seattle WA approximately 803.07 miles, a total of 4242.38 miles in 50.15 hours
driven to Elma WA approximately 88.88 miles but can’t seem to get from Elma Washington 43.73 miles to Shelton in less than 7 days.
UPS’s system is seriously broken in Washington State and heads should role, this is inexcusable service. We have called UPS several times working up the chain, we are told that there are weather conditions. There standard reply from all levels. The weather in Elma and Shelton has been nothing but rain with wet roads since the package arrived in Elma.
The package some how made it from Rhode Island to Elma, Washington in 50.15 hours traveling 4242.38 mile when it was actually storming. But in fairly mild winter weather (rain) can’t seem to make it from Elma to Shelton only 43.73 miles. I’m appalled at the nonsense we have received from UPS on the phone. One supervisor told me they over whelmed with packages and were 43 trailer trucks loads backed up in Elma WA distribution center. Yea right!! We believe UPS is hiding behind the guise of weather conditions when it is actually mismanagement and lack of planning.
A UPS truck passed by my daughters home last night 12/30/08 at approximately 8:00 pm West coast time and they flagged the driver down, the driver said he did not have there package, he was not from the Elma, Washington UPS, he said he would deliver if he receives the package. He had no problem getting around.
On the UPS website it states no refunds will be given "due to weather conditions" since the delivery of this package has not been affected by weather conditions we expect a full refund from UPS for the difference in delivery of 2nd day air to the cheapest ground delivery possible. In addition if UPS knows they can't deliver in two-days or whatever is paid for, they should be up front about the delivery and not take consumers money for services they cannot provide. We are wondering how many other customers have been bamboozled and money taken without providing services promised and paid for, frustrated and angry.
