Shortly after I contacted university of phoenix I was approach by their other school Western International University. University of Phoenix and Western International University both belong to the same company (Apollo Group). Since they are manage by the same company they pretty much operate in the same manner except, for the length of classes and team work requirements. I know this because my husband is a current student at Phoenix while I went for the other division Western International University. They enrolled me immediately ensuring that I was getting financial aid. Later, thru fafsa I learned that I was eligible for student grants and loans. However, I got nothing but, requests for documentation numerous of times. So many that I did I even lost count. The copies were either never clear enough for the financial aid company. Funny thing my husband never had that problem since the military pays for his tuition. This paper work process lasted for about a period of 8 to 9 months. In many of this occasions the school was trying to get rid of me by saying that I was denied financial aid because I did not provide the necessary documents. However, they would resubmit my application once I would get infuriated and threatened to report them. This all went on until the point that I owe $5000 dollars.
Even after being disappointed, sad and infuriated I tried making payment arrangements. They gave a phone number where they are supposed to handle this type of transactions. I called and got a recorded message, it stated that I should leave my contact info, which I did. A week past by and I called two more times. Both times I got the same recording and no one bothered to contact me within three weeks.
Then last week, I just received a phone call from a collection agency trying to collect the debt. Can you believe that they actually took this measure rather than working it out with me?
Furious, I started doing some research online and found websites and other people that have been wronged in one way or another by University of Phoenix.
Many people accused them of being a company run by frivolous individuals that only care about money. However, I believe that they have a right to be ambitious in our capitalist society. But, scamming people that is just plain wrong! It is about the way that they lure individuals believing one thing and doing another. One thing is actually charging for services and another is recruiting people with lies.
Once you have taken several classes you feel like you just want to pay and keep getting an education. In the other hand, debt affects our credit score. Not to mention even if you are transferring in to another school you need to pay them in order to get your credits transfer. So, what do poor individuals do? They simply pay since they are the ones on the line. That is how they are scamming people like me.
