This complaint was forwarded to the TSA and is awaiting response, I was startled to find out that the TSA sends you through body scanners without even telling you what they are doing, As a healthcare professional I feel it is important to make travlers aware of the dangers of this practice, to date there has not been any review by an independent party regarding the amounts of radiation these scaners expose you to, based on my experience a pregnant women could be randomly selected for a body scan without evening having a chance to decline causing the potential for harm to her and her unborn child, furthermore it is likely that these scans will increase the risk of developing testicular, thyroid, and breast cancer all things that TSA officers should be aware of as well as travlers selected for scans, I doubt many would agree to be subject to these dangers if they were made aware to us.
TSA officers at San Diego coerced me into a body scanner without any information about what they planned on doing, I told them I never agreed to go through the scanner and they informed me I never disagreed either however I was never given the oppertunity to decline, as a healthcare professional I am concerned with the national security but it is negligent on the part of the TSA to push people into body scanners and expose them to unnecessary high levels of radiation without informing them of what they are doing before hand, if the same was done to a pregnant women traveling this could lead to birth defects in her unborn child, furthermore this also increases the risk of thyroid cancer in all people put through this procedure, these among many other risks need to be explained to passengers before being put through a body scan. Due to this negligent act by TSA officers I am forwarding this complaint to several of my local goverment officials and news affiliates. Again I understand around the busy holiday season safety is of the biggest concern, but there has to be a happy medium between our safety while traveling and our health.
