We Don't Agree On an Oral Contract

Here's my story. I had an initial consultation with a chiropractor on the potential benefits of using his services with a machine for spinal decompression. When I was told the price for the treatment was $5400.00 for 20 treatments I was ready to leave. Then I was made an oral offer for a trial set of 10 treatments for me to see the benefits of it and where I was only obligated to pay if saw the benefit to continue treatments past the initial 10 otherwise I could walk away with no further obligation. This was explained to me by the receptionist. I agreed and filled out financing papers without signing them in case I did choose to continue the treatments. I did get some benefit from the treatments but chose not to continue. The chiropractor called and said I was in breach of the agreement because I did get some benefit from the initial treatments and that at the very least I should pay half which is $2700.00 or he would sue me for the full $5400.00. His side as I understand it is that the trial was to see if I got benefit from the treatment and only walk away if my condition didn't improve. He wanted to be assured that since I was taking time and resources away that another patient would benefit from that I would be prepared to pay if it helped which I can understand, however that wasn't the agreement as I understood it. As I don't have the resources for a lawyer I don't know if this is worth fighting or would it be better to pay. If you don't think my position has any merit please advise. If I had known that I was expected to pay only if the treatments helped me during the trial I would have never consented to the treatments. Any advice you would have is much appreciated. Thank you.
