Classic Stage Company Complaint

Theatre Policy: Latecomers Pay Full Price Ticket for Half a Show - Theatre Performance

- 136 East 13th St. NYC 10003
We had purchased two tickets for an 8 pm performance of "School for Lies" on Saturday 5/7/11. Having never been to this theatre, we had trouble finding it because of its unconventional curbside appearance: no easily discernible address number, no lighted billboard, no marquee.

When we finally entered what from the street looked like a coffee house, it was 8:05 pm. The box office refused to release our tickets and denied us entry until intermission at 9 pm. We asked to stand in the back until then but was told there was no "back" and standing violated fire codes; in other words, wait for intermission or leave. We left without seeing the show because it was pointless to wait an hour only to see the second half of the play.

When I bought the tickets, there was no advisory as to this usually uncompromising theatre policy. How many patrons would wait an hour to see half a play? How many patrons' money, therefore, were taken for nothing? Had I known this was how Classic Stage Company operated, I would never have agreed to pay to see a performance there.
