Jeep Chrysler Complaint

the tragedy waiting to happen

- portland, or
I believe someone needs to shed light on a serious and possible life threatening issues with Jeep Commanders. I own a 2007 Commander which has had one serious issue after another. We purchased this vehicle brand new. We completely fill this vehicle with our children and this is our only mode of transportation. We solely depend on this car to get to and from work, kids doctor’s appointment, games, and just to do whatever we may need. I am terrified to take my family any were in this car. I feel like someone should look into this. I cannot be the only Jeep Commander owner that this is happening to. When I read through other owners complaints on www.safecar.gov I found 133 complaints alone about the 2007 Jeep Commander ranging from April 14, 2007 to December 17, 2010. Some with issues like mine and others as serious as the vehicle losing total power. Please help us. I have outlined the most recent events below.

The Commander brakes will lock up while driving on the freeway, side streets, and parking lots. I have taken it into Jeep three times now in the last month and a half.

The first time 11/4/10 the brakes locked up and made a horribly loud grinding noise on the freeway and I could not drive I had to pay for a tow, pay for a rental car, pay them to diagnosis it, and lost time at work. They said all they could see is that the front right brake sensor told the brain of the car that it was going faster than the rest of the tires causing the abs to activate, but they could not duplicate it and sent me on my way.

The second time 12/15/10 the same thing happened, the front wheels locked up and made an awful grinding noise on the freeway and could I not drive. The ABS, ESP, BAS, slippery when wet, and service 4 wheel drive indicator lights all came on. I then had it towed into the dealership. Then once testing was done they said it was the same error being reported. So they replaced the front right sensor, and said they could not guarantee this would fix the issue.

I started researching Jeep and recalls that have happened and found recalls NHTSA id# 06V49300 & 07V434000. I also filed a claim with NHTSA. The dealership covered the tow and rental and I had to cover the parts. I informed them that I had found this information and seemed to me that I should not have had to pay for something that mimics/is the same as a known recall issue. I was then told I should contact Chrysler directly, which I did and filed a claim with them.

12/31/10 As I was waiting to get gas when it was my turn I pulled forward to the pump the brakes felt like it they were going to lock up and made a loud grinding noise as it had done previously when the brakes locked up on the freeway. Then after getting gas I went to leave and it made an even louder grinding noise and would not move forward. I then pulled over, put the car in park, cut off the engine, and restarted the car. I was then able to move forward without the noise, but all the indicator lights stayed lit.

Then on 12/31/10 while driving 60-65 mph on the freeway all of the indicator lights came on ABS, ESP, BAS, slippery when wet, and service 4 wheel drive. I immediately dialed the dealership and tried to get a hold of the representative that had helped us before. The person on the phone said he was in, but not at his desk, so I left a message asking him to please call me back most urgently. Thankfully the brakes did not lock up at that point in time. We were terrified as what to do so we continued to drive afraid that it might completely lock down on us.

Later that evening we drove to a friend’s house without the noise or indicator lights. Then when we were leaving we had the loud grinding and locking up feeling and all the indicators lights were on again. So we again pulled over, put the car in park, cut off the engine, and restarted the car, then same thing happened two more times. Then finally we were able to move forward without the noise, but all the indicator lights stayed lit.

1/3/11 I called the Jeep service department and went over the issue with the representative I had left a message for. He let me know he had gotten my message, but said it was too late to phone back. He then had the Jeep towed into the dealership and arranged for a rental car. I filed another claim with NHTSA and also reported the issue again to claim manager of Chrysler.

Jeep called to say that they are getting the same error message about the front sensor and also that the right front sensor error message issue reported some message about the right sensor reporting erratically. They found the sensor was full of water, cleaned it out, and repacked it. And they will drive it tonight and tomorrow to try and duplicate/test for the issue.
