Dear Consumer Champion,
Home Bathrooms Remodel Project
We have been having a nightmare experience with a contractor and have found we have little legal recourse. We have a signed project contract with Archon Construction & Renovation,(518) 796-6656, which we signed on 05/08/2010. Two bathrooms were to be remodeled and 9 six panel doors installed with new moldings for a total cost of $38,416. Due to project changes we did agree to an additional $8500 charge which would include a walk-in closet. To date we have given Archon $48,058.57 because they kept asking for more money and promising to finish the project, but 9 months later it isn’t finished. In the course of the project we learned one partner is a Physics teacher at Stillwater HS, who moonlights as a contractor even though he and his former partner (they are in legal battles over money) purported to be full time contractors. TThey hired all young former students to work on the project, not skilled tradesmen, but neither partner we contracted with provided on-site supervision, nor have been here in over 8 weeks. Now Archon only responds to our calls and emails asking for more money.
They regularly sub-contract with Lowes and continue to book more jobs before completing ours. They send their helpers to these jobs neglecting ours. Their crews have damaged our house. They knocked the alarm system speaker off the wall, spilled 5 gallons of varnish on our bedroom rug, dented furniture and are unable to put molding in properly. Archon promised complete satisfaction, but to date, our $700 shower faucet still doesn’t work, the new marble vanity top has been stained and the damaged rug hasn’t been replaced nor has all the molding. Holes cut through our walls remain rough and unpainted, no marble threshold has been installed as promised, the walk-in closet hasn’t been completed. We don’t have a closet. We are storing our clothes in our son’s bedroom. Archon only wants more money and lacks the integrity to follow through with their promises. I’m sure others in the area will be affected by them. We asked for a Capital Improvement tax form - ST 124, provided it to them, but they didn’t do it. We told them we needed the first bathroom completed before 7/1/10 as our soldier son would be home on leave from Afghanistan and we wanted him to be able to shower in a new bathroom. He will be home on February 7th after a 13 month tour, and the work isn’t complete and our home is still in a construction mess. His room is full with our clothes.
Any help you can provide with this situation would be appreciated.
Tom and Barb McHugh
