Centex Homes Complaint

Sub-Standard Quality of New Homes - New Homes

- Visalia, CA
Centex Homes refuses to repair cracks in the exterior stucco. Some of the cracks were present from the beginning (when the home was first purchased), but at that time, the cracks were "too small" to warrant a service request. We were told not to worry and that if they got bigger, they would be repaired. Over time, we have discovered the overall substandard quality of construction in our new home. A large crack formed in our ceiling, due to improper installation of the drywall, & it had to be repaired. Our stair banister loosened & became unsafe, & it was due to improper installation of the banister to the wall (i. e., it was not secured to a stud in the wall). We also noticed that a patch of grass was drying, & when we dug into the soil, we discovered debris (i. e., pieces of tile, etc.) which apparently was not removed before the sod was installed. We are now convinced that the various Centex construction crews are not being properly supervised. Going back to the cracks in the stucco, the cracks did not get "large enough" until after the warranty had expired, but Centex had been made aware of the cracks during the warranty period. Thus, Centex chose to do a "courtesy" repair on the cracks, but when the repair person came to the house, he repaired only one of the larger cracks & some of the smaller cracks. When asked why he was repairing the smaller cracks & not the larger cracks, he told us that he was not authorized to repair the other cracks. At one point, the repairman told us to "help ourselves" to the left-over plaster, and we attempted to repair one of the larger cracks with no avail. So, we then submitted another service request. Our request was denied because they stated the cracks were "altered." When we complained with the main office in Sacramento, they investigated but then concluded that a "third-party" repair attempt now made the cracks "unwarrantable." We asked if it was fair that the "courtesy" of their employee now made the remaining cracks "unwarrantable," but they have not responded. We plan to go protest outside of the Centex Model Homes/Sales Office next weekend.

Also, as we have been talking to other people about our difficulites with Centex. We have discovered that another Centex neighborhood in Visalia is currently suing Centex for problems with the concrete, and that another Centex neighborhood in Porterville is going to sue due to problems with mold. Thus, we feel that consumers need to be made aware of the sub-standard quality of Centex Homes.

Thank you.
