AT&T Complaint

Special At&t Promo or Scam??? You tell Me... - Internet Service

- Oakland, CA
I am an Actor and Care taker for both my grandfather and Mother. As is the case for many citizes at this time, money is on a tight budget.
In December I called AT&T to cancel my home phone service and see if I could find a more feasible Internet plan. I was told by one of the AT&t Customer Service Reps that I did not need to have a landline, as they offered a service called DryLoop Internet. It was explained to me that AT&T was offering a "Promotional" Dryloop internet plan for $14.95 a month for 12 months. I was very relieved and satisfied that AT&t Was offering such a great plan.
Well, Imagine my shock when I opened up my first bill to discover that I owe $42.56! For Sure this was a mistake, so I called the Billing department, where I explained my situation. A Rep and then Supervisor explained to me that Many Customers were calling about the same exact thing! The representative went on to tell me, that it "Should have been explained to me that the $14.95 price would not kick in for up to 4 BILLING CYCLES." My Answer: It was NOT explained to me, as I would not have signed up for a more expensive plan when my whole intent to cancelling home service and signing up for the new plan was to save money.
I spoke with numerous reps to get the plan set up, and not ONE person mentioned that I would be paying almost 3 times what I agreed for up to 4 months. Both Rep and Supervisor "Apologized" about this but offered no Solution to make me as the Customer whole. If I give AT&T the benefit of the doubt, yes they made a mistake. Ok, well we all make mistakes, and the Right thing to do when you make a mistake is to Correct it! But AT&T told me that I am responsible to pay the $42+ for up to 4 months, and then be Credited after the 4 months. So what happens If I can't afford that??? I accrue late charges, have to call every month and make payment arrangements for something which was never Verbally or in Writing explained to me. How is this LEGAL??? What is my recourse as a consumer??? By 2 employee admissions in the Billing Department Many people are complaining of the same thing! Mistake or Scam???? Any FeedBack helpful. Aside from my budgetary constraints I will not pay this On principle alone. Time to look for a New provider!
