My sister received her registration for a renewal on her 97 Mitsubishi Montero Spec ED.. It required a Test Only Station. We took it to the station we have used for the past several years. It passed every standard on low speed. It passed every standard on high speed except the Hydro carbons emissions. The required standard was 29 the Mitsibishi had 32. Our smog man said that they -whoever in the State of CA sets these standards have set the emission standard for her car extremely low and showed us in his book that other cars were allowed higher hydro carbon emissions standards than hers. We took it to our mechanic who always works on our cars and also is a smog technician. He gave it a tune up and new plugs etc. when we picked it up almost $400.00 later. he told us the same thing that the emissions requirement was set sooo low that it was very close but hard to do anything more. He also stated that the standard was much more strict for our Mitsubishi than other cars. If it didn't pass to bring it back and they would try to think of somethuing else to get it lower. The catalytic converter was fine as evidenced by the other emissions on the smog test. Well, we took it back today and still it did not pass. We want to know why the emissions standards are so strict for our car while it is more lenient with other makes and models? Other cars are being passed at higher hyrocarbon emission output than
ours. Why are we being discrimminated against? This is outrageous. Who sets these standards and why are they so inequitable? Here we are in the midst of a financial crisis and we have to worry about losing the use of our car to this act of discrimmination. Help!

Posted by dkconsignments on 02/16/2010 You only need to try a few things to get the car to pass the HC (hydrocarbon) emmission test.Higher HC levels are caused by excess fuel being passed through the cars engine without being completely burned in the cylnders, hence why the creation of the catalitic converter to burn up the excess fuel...you can add HIGH performance spark plugs, plug wires and reduce some of the excess fuel flow by,the standard plugs and wires usually wont help on older model cars like yours because of normal engine wear in the Rings/cylnders/valves....
a week before the test You need to fill up with high octane fuel such as 94 octane and add a fuel injection cleaner and run the tank almost to empty,,,,then the day of the test you need to put in 10 gallons of 94 octane and add 4 ounces of Acetone...which you can buy at any suto parts store or hardware store...it must be pure acetone..sometimes even drug stores carry it in 16oz bottles...then make sure you drive the car for about 2 hours and then take it to the test area..the engine must be at top temperature...Acetone can reduce hydrocarbon emissions up to 60 percent. In some older cars, the HC readings with acetone in a 1996 GMC went from 440ppm to 195ppm
Posted by dkconsignments on 02/16/2010 I have used the Acetone method many times to get many different vehicles to pass emissions testing,Acetone results in a more complete vaporization with other factors remaining the same.More complete vaporization means less wasted fuel, hence the greatly reduced HC emissions and even increased MPG,,Acetone helps gasoline to burn up completely so that the excess fuel that was formerly wasted past the rings and sent out the tailpipe as HC's is greatly reduced.Any parts made to run with gasoline/diesel will work with acetone just fine....adding acetone to your fuel once or twice per year for an emmissions test will cause no harm...a few other points >Do not run any gasoline fuels in your car that are higher than 94 octane..
stay away from the higher octanes like 98 or 105 unless you have had high performance racing modifications done to your engine,,,Do not put standard rubbing alcohol in your gas either,,its mostly water,,do not run aviation fuel either or you will greatly upset the emissions technician..
and when your car passes Never tell them you added anything to your fuel not even fuel injection cleaner...out of sight out of mind...
