We are tenants that are homeless due to a landlord who does not take care of her property or her tenants. We moved into a one bedroom apt in October and the promises of finishing the repairs before we moved in were lies. We had to move in anyway because of notice we gave to previous landlord. Once we moved in a week later the electric was turned off due to non-payment from the landlord, rent is $900.00 with utilitied included. She had utilitied turned back on in 2 days. There were a lot of repairs that had to be done but were not done. Alot of empty promises and no results. It's been 7 months later and 2 notices from the utility company on the front doors of the building stating a warning of non-payment of over $4,ooo in utility bill. Last week the utilities were shut off and she was called numerous times by all 4 tenants, when she finally answered a call from us by a number she didn't recognize and put on speaker in front of all the tenants, she stated that she couldn't do anything because it was 7pm and we would have to figure something out for ourselves, and then stated that the utility company wanted $3,000 to turn it back on and she wasn't going to pay it because she didn't have the money and we all would have to find another place to live. We called legal aide, the building inspectors, department of social services, the city building inspectors posted the building as unsafe and occupancey of building prohibited. We have an elderly gentlemen, and tenants on government assistance. We also learned from a department of social services food stamp worker when we tried to get reimbursed for food that rotted, that this landlord had the utilities shut off herself on the 7th of may after she received payments of rent for the month. She will not answer my phonek calls but will speak to another tenant about the situation and repeatedly says to "hang in there till the forst of the month and the utilities will be turned back on." She also was heard on speaker phone telling this tenant that it was my fault the utilities werent paid because I wasn't paid in full on the rent, the repairs that needed to be done myself and my fiance did ourselves, including finishing a bathroom from sheetrocking to painting, plus additional repairs, so she only received half the rent. We are all told to pay our rent at a local bar that she owns and receive receipts from various bartenders or who ever is in the bar during the day. She is now claiming she hasnt received a lot of rent payments from all tenants including our neighbors who are also renters of her property. It seems like no one will really help us with this landlord and make her accountable for her actions. And it's like she is getting away with treating people like this. The elderly gentleman was currently put into a hotel on the ourskirts of town with no transportation, and the rest of us are staying in this building with no utilities because we can't afford to move because this woman collected rent for this month, I myself work but other tenants depend on government services who r only willing to help but so much. I hope this story is enough to get your attention and help to expose this landlord for what she is doing to good people who don't deserve to be treated like they are less than nothing. thank you for your time
