Price Guarantee New policy at Shaws/Star Market
… ‘If you catch us stealing from you, we’ll give you back what we stole’.
Now, of course this is a paraphrase of their new policy. But essentially, this is what their new policy states. That’s what they call a “Price Guarantee”. Recently, I spoke to the store manager at Shaws’ Sudbury location and he said that it was not exactly true. In their defense he said they would honor the lower price. Well, most people wouldn’t complain if they were charged less. Therefore the only scenario remaining is the one described.
After calling customer service (case # ******), Carmen in Utah, took notes and chuckled at my paraphrasing, but agreed that this was the new policy. The next day John Lunt the Store Director of operations at the Sudbury location called me. He agreed that this was the new policy and asked if there was anything else that he could help me with.
Clearly their old policy of rewarding the customer for his alertness in catching the store’s error was beneficial to both the customer and the store. It was a win-win situation. In this digital age it has been shown that supermarkets are routinely overcharging their customers. As an attempt to avoid fines and have good public relations, they would give the customer the item free of charge when the mistake was reported. This made the customer happy and the store would change the computer price for future transactions. In effect, the customer was working for the store in reporting these mistakes. It was a small price to pay for the store to improve public relations and obey the law. Other supermarkets continue to have this policy.
At a time when food prices are dramatically on the rise, it would be wiser for Shaws to find a different way to save a few dollars and to try to retain their loyal customer base. Instead, they have insulted their customers by displaying this policy as a new benefit, while being so verbose in the particulars that it is difficult to see that the end result is that they will steal from you if you don’t catch them.
