Pilgrim Furniture Complaint

Customer is not always right at Pilgrim Furniture!

- Southington, CT
After much research, I purchases a mattress from Pilgrim Furniture. Big mistake. The saleswoman never left me alone. She didn't show me any inexpensive mattresses and barely let my head turn in their direction. I mentioned my hesitation to the saleswoman about purchasing a mattress from Pilgrim as they do not offer a 30 day trial period like the bedding stores do. She assured me if I was unhappy, that Pilgrim would return the mattress. When closing the deal, I mentioned again my hesitation and she again reassured me. 10 days later I called Pilgrim to return the mattress as it was hurting my back -- they REFUSED. The saleswoman got on the phone and she denied ever saying that to me. I spoke with a Mgr who refused to do anything. He basically told me I was lying and that the saleswoman would never say that. I asked to have one of the owners call me -- they never called. If you aske me, the saleswoman said anything to 'get the sale'. I trusted her - my mistake. I will NEVER purchase anything from Pilgrim again. In addition, I live 5 miles away and they're delivery charge is $129.99 !!

The above complaint about a mattress from Pilgrim Furniture reflects the attitude my husband and I were subject to after purchasing almost $5,000 worth of furniture. After our sofa and loveseat were delivered, we realized it did not match anything in our living room, and this was with the assistance of their interior decorator, which we were told is "no charge" when purchasing furnishings. She visited our home before we chose the furniture and we told her we wanted a blue theme to go with our antique seascape pictures throughout the room. In the store, the day after she viewed our living room, a pattern was chosen and the product we received was definitely not the blue color print viewed at the store. Although it was a beautiful fabric, it was definitely not for the room. The interior decorator commented that she had brought these swatches to our home prior to ordering the fabric to ensure they would match. She was mistaken -- had she done that, we would have realized immediately they were wrong for the room, and that would have been the end of it. We made the mistake of counting on her judgment as a professional, and believe me, we'll never do that again. After many calls to the store (11 or 12) we explained that there had been a mistake in the fabric and we were even willing to split the re-stocking charge -- but we could not accept this color. Not only would they not agree to splitting the cost, between the 10% restocking charge and 30% penalty, the transaction cost us $682.00 -- this was even after the decorator remarked the set was so beautiful, they'd sell it "in a minute." Since they were unwilling to compromise, we were stuck with the charges, cancelled the other furniture items and went elsewhere. I found the same items on the internet at another store who not only were less expensive, but who gave us a senior citizen discount. Additionally, the second store was another 35 miles farther than the first, and their delivery charge was $40 less than Pilgrim Furniture.

DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY. I wrote a letter to David Bassett who I was told was the president of the company (Milford CT). I also sent a copy to Consumer Protection. Bring witnesses with you and a notary public. The customer gets the shaft at Pilgrim Furniture. What an expensive lesson for us!

I Went to the store with my wife in Milford today and I was shocked about how closely the salesperson stuck by your side. They do not give you breathing room to look around. I am not sure if that is their way of doing business. I went to Bob's a few blocks down the road and was allowed to look around and discuss things with my wife. The sales person on the other hand at Pilgrims wanted to make decisions for us without knowing our financial situation.

The experience at Pilgrims was very uncomfortable and intrusive at the least. Also, I was told that they offered financing at 0% for the next 6 months while their website said 12 months no pmt, no interest. What is up with that inconsistency? Thank you for your post and this helps me in making a decision.

RIP OFF REFUND POLICY. I PUT A CASH DEPOSIT ON A SOFA. REFUND POLICY STATES A CANCELLATION FEE OF 10% FOR IN STOCK FURNITURE AND 30% FOR SPECIALN ORDERS. I PUT A DEPOSIT OF 150.00. ASSUMING MY CANCELLATION FEE WOULD 15.00 (10%). WHAT THEY FAIL TO TELL YOU IS THAT THEY CHARGE YOU 10% OF THE COST OF THE ITEM. SO THEY REDUCED MY DEPOSIT BY 61.00 PLUS TAX. SO I RECIEVED A REFUND OF 84.00 FROM MY 150.00.
BEWARE******THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF

This is absolutely the worst and unprofessional company I have ever dealt with. We purchased a dining room set that ran us close to 4k when everything was said and done. Well, after about 2 weeks we decided to sit and have dinner in the formal dining area instead of the eat in kitchen (two full time working parents here) and can you believe a sweating glass actually ruined the table in less than 2 minutes? So naturally we give them a call and were told we would receive a call from a technician which never happened so after about a week I call and get the same 'ol story, only this time after another week I finally get a call to have someone come by. When the gentleman comes in to look at the table he seemed a bit surprised. He asked me what I used to polish the table and I inform that I used what they sold me and told me that it was the right thing to do but couldn't believe the table reacted the way it did (if left a really bad gloss mark). So anyway he worked on it and it actually got worse. He told me that they needed to replace this table and he would write a ticket.

I went ahead and called the store on numerous occasions and even spoke to the manager (who seemed to be on vacation or out of the office way too much!). I kept getting the run around and eventually I just let it go. It just wasn't worth the aggravation and I don't have the time to chase people down. I did however made it a point to let EVERYONE I know to stay away from this place (Milford, CT store).
