Door To Door Magazine Sales
|
| - HOMEWOOD, IL |
I had a very polite fairly well dressed man of African decent came to my door selling magazines for a company named OVERACHIEVERS ENTERPRISES, INC from Homewood, IL. The man said that he was a troubled youth and is trying to better his life through a program of selling magazines for this company. I listened to his story and thought I would help him out, I wrote the company a check for $50.00 for a one year subscription of Four Wheel Magazine on Jan 26, 2007. It was supposed to take 90 to 120 days to take delivery according to the receipt. I never received the magazine. I found my receipt on Aug 6,2007 and called the number on the receipt and found that it was a private residence and the address doesn't exist.
When I looked on the Internet for OVERACHIEVERS ENTERPRISES, INC, the company I discovered was a scam and I wasn't the only one to fall victim. Read Next Complaint >>

Posted by maylathd on 08/27/2007 I too am a victim of this scam. I had used this service once before and it was valid and I received my magazine. I don't know what happened this time. My order dates back to August of '06. I am still trying to get my money back. I am going to contact the magazine company that I wanted a subscription from and see if they can do anything. Their name is also linked with this org. and I would hope they wouldn't want a bad rap.
Posted by todd on 09/22/2007 I too have a similar story. I wrote a check for $40.00 but a month later the check was cashed for $570.00. My signature had been left intact, but the amount have been noticably altered. I am currently looking in to this company.
Posted by ladybug77732 on 10/29/2007 I don't know if I am necessarily a victim but I am pretty angry. A girl came to our door saying she was a single mom and was earning points to go to college. I am a single mom myself and so I fell for her story. I told her I didn't have the money until Friday (this was a monday). She said it wasn't a problem that they won't cash it for 2-3 weeks. So I stupidly wrote the check. They cashed it 2 days later and subsequently my account was overdrawn from other charges coming out. This company that helps "Single moms" just screwed a real single mom out of over $100 dollars in bank fees and those shoes and socks my daughter needed? Can't get them now. And when I called to complain, shockingly, no one answers any calls. I am the stupid one on this but I can't believe people can get away with it!!
Posted by Twin24life on 11/15/2007 Same thing happened to us. A black male came to our door selling magazines on August 14th 2007. My husband thought it would be nice to help this kid out, and get me subscriptions to Star magazine, and OK! magazine. It's been forever, my husband wrote the check for $128.00 and I keep calling this guy named Yusef?? Here is his number if anyone wants it. (310) 926-2124
Call him up. I still have my receipt. It says we are entitled to a REFUND. I'm going to the local police station to report this. If anyone wants to contact me on this my e-mail is Twin24life@aol.com
Posted by mklein49 on 12/09/2007 Same thing happened here. I signed up for a magazine for 60 bucks on 7/27/07. I never received it. I just called the number 310-926-2124. The guy said to call back on Monday. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes and report back.
Posted by matt on 01/21/2008 The same thing happened to me. A girl named Tatisha White sold me magazines on 9-27-07. My check was cashed on 10/1/2007. It was cashed with her name and what looks like her DL#. On the back of the check it says "Pay to the order of Bank of America Kirkland, Washington 98033, for deposit only Overachievers Enterprise." My bank is investigating it, but if we have the bank that the money has been deposited in shouldn't we be able to find them? I also have the same phone number of the Yousef criminal which is obviously a front . Im going to file a police report against this chick, they should be able to find her if this is a real DL number. Last time I ever feel sorry for anyone, I may not give candy out at Halloween. Small minority ruins it for the whole.
Posted by melissa on 02/27/2008 I was also hit by this scam. I don't normally buy from door to door sales, however the one time I did prior to this it worked. I have tried several different phone numbers with no success, and finally located the company website. I sent an email, and I am hoping for a response.
Posted by dawn_ardent on 12/02/2008 I had this happen in Salt Lake City, UT. I paid 85.00 for magazines that I never ordered. I ended up reporting it to the police, since it was cashed that day, and then I never heard another word. Does anyone have a number or contact information for where this business is supposed to be located?
Posted by panuel on 01/02/2009 I just got scammed in Miami Florida by Tatisha White. She had a verey sad song and dance. The company is now Called American National, Inc.. I feel sorry for her, she just got God aganst her. The truth is that she just got $60.00 off of me, but she just signed her own sentence with God.
Posted by midnytsnx on 01/31/2009 Bought $217 worth of mags that never came. Got ahold of someone @ (310-926-2124 # on my receipt) who asked me when I submitted my check. When I told him over a year ago, he asked me to call back in an hour... Now he won't answer
Posted by bryanadams48 on 02/13/2009 A "solicitor" working for "Overachievers" was just sentenced here in California for the rape and murder of a 90 year old woman who opened the door to him. Life in prison for this piece of filth. He'll have it much better than the last minutes of his victim. I, for one, would very much like to know where these people are located.
Posted by tarawallace12 on 03/12/2009 They're back at it, currently working the town of Moraga, California. Here's a blog entry on one person's interaction with one of these... people.

Posted by darealest407 on 05/09/2009 I too was got by this american national b.s. I wrote a check out for $509.00 for three magazines(which i thought sounded pretty steep but I wanted to help) I never recieved my magazines and never got my money back. though I can't remember the young man name who came to my door here in greensboro N.C. i do remember there "managers" name which is saeed and abdul cooper so if this information is valuable to anyone use it
Posted by ericthomas on 08/22/2009 I was also visited by a guy yesterday, but started grilling him on the company. He was very smoothe and polished (he seems like he could certainly succeed in a legitimate profession!!) and also pulled the "troubled youth" line out. In his folder he had a couple $20s and someone's check for $218. He was even starting to wear me down, but it started to rain so I had to go inside and told him to come back. He said he couldn't, he was only in town for one day. Same group though, American National, but the mailing address listed was in South Carolina. Grr
Posted by lmotola on 08/23/2009 I am with Matt on this, the small majority ruins it for the whole. I was taken several months ago for $200 from these people. I am usually generous and buy from whomever comes to the door, that will never happen again. I don't see their website but I am going to write to Reader's Digest (one of the magazines I ordered) and tell them about this.
Posted by complaint on 09/03/2009 Looks like we may have been taken for a few bucks as well. Same story as above. Young black woman, trying to better herself, selling overpriced magazine subs. Figured there was one I wanted and why not help out, right? This was back in June. I'm now certain I'll never see that magazine.
The information from the receipt: American National, Inc 931 "B" south main st Suite 184 Kernersville, NC 27284 336-423-2888
Too bad for any legitimate sales people from here on out. This tools have ruined it for them.
Posted by sammsneed on 09/22/2009 Hello all. I do apologize 4 your mishaps with this cmpny. I used 2 work 4 american national myself. Once I found out that my son was born,I told my boss and they left me stranded in Cincinnati Ohio. They cleaned out my bank account and cut my Phone off. I had no idea they were doing ppl like this. This website was just shown to me so I decided 2 post a comment. So to all that enter this website ,if anyone from American National comes to your door, close your door and call the cops! they are there to scam u outta your money! Trust me I know!
Posted by hakalisch on 10/06/2009 My husband never buys anything from salesman, this time he felt sorry for the young girl named Renee Whole who was trying to better herself and raise money to go back to school. When we didn't receive the magazine in the 120 days, I tried to call and e-mail the company. The e-mail was returned as a mail demon and the phone you get a recording stating the person is not available to come to the phone. I'm turning this over to my local police and will try the magazine itself to see if I can get any satisfaction. If not, if they ever come around I will call the police with a pretense of getting my check book.
Posted by jksaslaw on 10/10/2009 American National is now in New Orleans, LA. A young woman came by yesterday, same sob story. The address on the receipt was now 8557 W. US Highway 20 W., Michigan City, IN 46360. Phone 336-453-0376. Thanks to you folks who have posted, I'm stopping the check, which luckily wasn't for a lot of money. She also asked for some of the money in cash, saying she would get extra points or something. This tells me she was in on the scam. Any reports of identity theft from these people? Sounds as if they just cash the checks.
Posted by pchibuzor on 11/19/2009 I too fell victim to American National Inc. The format was the same as in the story. They altered my check to read 10x the actual amount I contributed. Luckily I checked my account on the morning the check processed and my bank agreed to return it. This happened in Sugar Land, TX.
Posted by losingit85 on 12/21/2009 its amazing how when u hear somethin over an over again people believe it but somehow the truth can be so distorted an seem believeable through repitition. Ive worked for this company an checked on many of my customers an they all got their magazines. they dont write on here about the two hours seminars given daily to guys like me about motivation, persistence, and the power of a positive attitude. they dont write about the young people who are educated on books like think an grow rich and how to win friends an influence people. this company have helped develop many hard core unemployables into young sales people who can use this skill the rest of their lives. this company has never been overachievers inc an has never been based out of south carolina.like ALL companies they have complaints an mistakes.if u have not gotten your magazines within the prescribed period that it states on your receipt then call 3364530376 an they will get them to you.I had to write this comment to enlighten people on the truth.
Posted by selenawest on 12/29/2009 I too was taken for this scam...and our president wants to help people like this!! It's ironic how good people like us are willing to help people out, even in a rough economic time like this and we get what to show for it...ROBBED!! I will NEVER help anyone out again...this really sucks that it has to come to this, there will be no good people left in this world, you just can't trust ANYONE!!
Posted by cvadam on 01/05/2010 If anyone needs to reach American National Inc. Their number is 336-453-0376
Posted by doubekrunkel on 05/01/2010 Just got scammed by American National this afternoon. I had a feeling, but so wanted to believe it was true. I put a stop on the check with the bank I have also set up them as being a fraud company. Looks like I will learn this lesson only once. thanks for the info everyone wrote on this site.
Posted by sawdust on 05/04/2010 I JUST had a girl who fit these stories to a T. She was so smooth, I decided to hear her out.But before I allowed myself to blindly help, I looked up the company. I was led to this site, and actually invited her in to look at it. She seemed surprised of course, and I suppose I will never actually know to what degree she was aware, but I suspect it was much more then she let on. I told her see ya.A Trillion thanks to this page.HA HA Caught Red Handed!Brilliant.
Posted by jannety.hawkins on 05/11/2010 I just had a guy with "American National" come to the door to try to get me to buy magazines for 'inner city kids' as well as to help him 'win $1000'. Anyway, I said no, and I'm assuming its linked to the scam type being discussed here. I'm in Minneapolis MN
Posted by kmflynn_01 on 05/14/2010 Yes, we had the same thing happen in Saint Paul, MN today. I gave them a check for $35.00 but something didn't quite feel right and so have now done a little search. We will stop payment on the check first thing in the morning.
Posted by jasmin_sas on 05/22/2010 I live in RIchfield and they stopped at my house. They had a similar story and they were professional. I told them to come back later so I could do some research before I gave a donation. I'm glad I did! Thanks for posting.
Posted by lj-turtle on 06/03/2010 It appears they have reached Eden Prairie, MN. Andrew Smither knocked on my door last night and he was such a delightful and charismatic person with, of course, the sad story of parents with a heroin habit. My husband says I am too nice, and I guess he is right, because I renewed a magazine and gave "Andrew" a check for 93.00. It is too bad you cannot be on your computer and listening to a sales pitch at the same time. I googled the company after he left and found all your stories. I too have put a stop payment on the check. I mailed the cancellation, but who knows what will ever happen to that. I made copies of everything. Good luck to all of you out there, and if you have Internet on your cell phone, use it while you smile and nod at the thief at your door.
Posted by kbergquist on 06/17/2010 DAMN IT!
I was truly hoping that this nice young woman who came to my St. Paul, MN home was legit. I subscribed yesterday afternoon when this young lady caught me while I was gardening. I wrote her a check for $28.00 and of course now I'm doing the research. I called the phone number that someone posted on this site 336-453-0376 and was able to reach "American National" I quized the young lady on the other end of the phone and she was able to answer all my questions. I'm not going to cancel my check just yet, I'm going to risk it and see if I actually get this "Bridal Guide" magazine.
Posted by Kushiel32 on 08/19/2010 These people are now in Pittsburgh, PA residents beware.
Posted by milakette on 08/23/2010 They now call themselves American National, Inc.: www.animagazines.com. This young black man came to our house and introduced himself as an 18 year-old married father of a 2 year-old boy
Posted by skinny_gringo on 01/06/2011 In July 2010, they were in Green, Ohio (South of Akron, Ohio). Needless to say, my checks were cashed in August, and I did not get either of the two subscriptions. One was for $75.00, and the other was for $85.00, for a total of $160.00. Two younger (19 and 20 years old) "inner city" girls stopped by and appartenly scammed me to. Both phone numbers have full mail boxes, so you can't leave a message, not that it matters because they never called me back anyway. And it looks like a complaint to the BBB is no help either, because I have not heard back from them. NEVER AGAIN!!!
The girls name were "Fa Shane Baker", and "Robin Wilkerson" by the looks of it on the reciepts. My regret is that it took me 6 months before it dawned on me that I got scammed. Whether the girls were in it or not, I don't know. But the company sure is.
Posted by milakette on 01/18/2011 According to the their web site, they hold "two motivational meetings daily reading from known authors such as: Dennis Kimbro, Les Brown, Dale Carnegie, and Zig Ziglar." So I let them know their names are linked with that kind of business: Dale Carnegie's senior vice president David Fagiano (www.dalecarnegie.com/about_us/franchise.jsp), Dr. Dennis Kimbro (www.denniskimbro.com), Les Brown (www.lesbrown.com) and Zig Ziegler (www.ziglar.com). I let the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce (www.kernersvillenc.com) know the ANI scam. They are going to share my info with the local Police Department. I also plan to send a letter to the editor of the Kernersville newspaper alerting people. TAKE MATTERS INTO YOUR OWN HANDS!
Posted by milakette on 01/18/2011 SP: They are also American National, Inc. www.animagazines.com
Posted by milakette on 01/20/2011 I suggest you contact that city's Police Station and report it to the sheriff. Also, file a complaint with the BBB and your state's Attorney General.
These people are also called American National, Inc. Their address is 931 "B" South Main St. Suite 184, Kernersville, NC 27284, Phone: 877-547-6927 x 2
Posted by milakette on 01/20/2011 To losingit85 who posted on 12/21/2009: you are a LIAR and you know that. There are victims of your scams all over this country! LIAR, but we'll eventually get to your bosses.
Posted by milakette on 02/14/2011 UPDATE: The (NC) Kernersville Chamber of Commerce let me know ANI's address is a mail box in a UPS store. The Kernersville Police Department told me this scam is ran from FL and thought it was already closed. (They advise me to file a complaint at my local Police Department.) I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of NC and the NC State Attorney General. I contacted ALL magazines listed in their web site, ALL credit cards, PayPal, etc. I told them they were lending credibility to ANI by allowing them to use their logo. Also, that the magazines have no price, making it impossible to pay on line. ANI’s web server has their same scammy look: www.impressiveconceptsinc.com.
