In April of 2011 I received a bill from Nicor for a property that I have not lived in since May of 2008. I moved out of that house in May 2008 and a renter moved in. She remained there for about a year, then another renter came in until November 30 2009. At that point the house remained vacant. Because of our financial situation we could no longer afford the home and included it in our bankruptcy as a forcloser. When we moved from the house our bills were paid and up to date, so we did not have a balance due. When I received this bill which is dated for services from November 2009 until June 2010 I contacted Nicor. They informed me that when a tenant moves out the service is turned back on in the owners name. They stated that they do this to prevent damage to the property that could be caused by turning off the gas. I informed them that I never authorized that the gas be turned on in my name. I questioned why it took so long for them to contact me, they informed me that it took this long to research to find out where I was. My contact information has not changed since I lived at that home so I doubt that they even tried. I have lived in the same address that I transferred the service to when I moved from that house and my phone numbers have been the same for the last 8 years. I have spoken to three people at Nicor and they both have told me the same thing, that I am responsible for the bill. I desire for them to zero out the bill, not place it in collections and maybe go after the bank to recoup their losses. I would have had no problem paying the bill back in 2009 had I known that the service was turned on in my name. But I didn't know that. And for them to say that they didn't know who was the owner of the home, when in the same conversation they stated to me "that according to public records" I was the owner is a contradiction. I believe that the property manager that was assigned to the home by the bank, turned the gas on in my name.
