Progressive Movers, INC (PMI) Complaint

Movers hold furniture for ransom. - Moving

- Paterson, NJ
We hired this company to do our moving from our 1 bedroom apartment in NJ to a house 9 miles away. They quoted $350 for 4 guys, for 5 hours. When we asked about extra charges, they said if we packed everything ourselves, we would not have extra charges. We really only needed them to move a couple pieces of furniture so we agreed with the estimate. The Tuesday prior to the move, a man came out to do the insurance and looked around at our already packed apartment and made a comment about not incurring any additional charges since we were mostly packed ourselves. We got a receipt of the estimate at this time with all packing material sections crossed out. In addition, there was a small note saying we should provide all our packing if we don't want to be charged, which we had. Our move was set up to start between 9-10 on Saturday. When Saturday came, the 3 movers didn't show until 11am. They then came in and started packing things that didn't need to be packed in boxes or taped. For example, we were going to put our glass table tops in our car to drive over, they put both of them in 2 separate crates without asking or notifying us. Once they packed everything and drove over to our house, they proceeded to present a bill for $2000. They refused to honor the price they gave us and said they needed to charge us 1100 for packing material ($250 each for the boxes to carry the glass) & for 3 flights of stairs. Note: our new house is split level and has 2 small 4 stair staircases that they charged for separately 300 each. There was no getting this price down. We talked to managers who wouldn't do anything but drop one stair and say they were going to then leave our furniture in the hallway. Finally they took off 200...that was it. They said someone should've told us the extra charges but no one would take the blame or even apologize. When asked about the 4-5 times we called to verify the charges they said they didn't know who we talked to. In all of this commotion, I called the manager twice and he hung up on me twice. They wouldn't take a check to cash and without cash would take our belongings to their warehouse until we could pay cash. Meanwhile, it is almost 4 and the banks are closing so we had to hurry to the bank while they sat outside and we took out the 1300 to pay them in addition to what we had budgeted. This was a complete scam & this company should be stopped. We are hoping for some resolution and although we paid them cash, we felt robbed of that money since we were NEVER informed of any extra charges and only needed a couple bodies to help carry some heavy furniture.

I received a estimated price that was too good to be true so I called them and asked how they could possibly offer these rates. Sam began to explain to me that they provide moving services only, That they specialize in commercial moves and they do residential rarely, But when they do they expect everything to be packed so he went on to explain to me that each glass / fragile / and electronic item that is in the house must be wrapped / boxed or covered. Next question Sam asked me was about additional services that I might need, he asked me if I had to have anything hoisted, if there are any additional stops, if there are any items that are extremely difficult to handle, if the movers had to walk up and down stairs, or if there was a very long distance that the items needed to be carried.
I began to explain to him the details of what my move consisted of, each item I named that was being moved he told me what materials I need to buy to have it packed by them and I explained to him where there were flights of stairs in my pickup location. Sam adjusted the quote repeated what was going to be done:
This is what he told me.

The load, unload, truck, workers, gas, mileage, insurance was included in my price

Additional to your move: he listed travel time, stair fee of $150.00 and if any materials boxes tape etc. I needed during the move Progressive would give me access to a third party company that can supply it to me as a courtesy.

He then explained me the cost of the new-quote again.
Your 2 bedroom move would require us to do
2-3 hours of loading because of the stairs
$150.00 fee for stair case
and then 2 hours to unload and reassemble
plus one hour of travel time

On the day of the move 3/17/11, I was extremely pleased at how quickly and limber the movers were. It almost seemed as though they were in a rush but with expert precision.

Finally the bill came I was quoted just under $600.00 and the bill came out to be $750.00 I was aware of the charge because I asked him how much the TV would be to wrap since I didn't have time to do it myself. I gave the movers a $250.00 tip

The total move cost me $1000.00 with tip!

I have copies of estimates from the 3 top competing companies each one was over $1500.00 to do my move! I dont know how they manage to do it. But I will definatly recommend, and use Progressive Movers Inc. again!

I have been treated fairly by Progressive, they said they move over 100 people a month maybe if you are persistent with requesting some kind of re-evaluation of the bill they will. Good luck
