My ex-wife is disabled and moved from a one-bedroom apartment to a new apartment five miles away. The movers charged her more than $2,000 and added more than $500 in charges during the move. She was quoted an estimate of $642 for three men to work for four hours. The company sent only two inexperienced men, and it took them four hours just to load the truck. They waited until the four hours was nearly up and the truck was loaded, and then called me to tell me that I had to pay for three more hours before they would begin unloading. Then they waited while I drove to the moving company to pay, and they charged me an hourly rate for the waiting time, even though they could have called me well in advance so that I could have paid before the initial four hours was up. When I arrived at the moving company office and demanded an explanation, a male employee came through the door and out into the reception area to confront me, even though there was an reception counter with a window and I was speaking with another employee at the window. At one point, the man confronting me in the reception area grabbed my credit card and tried to take it from me. In all, the bill came to $2,107 for packing a one-bedroom apartment and moving five miles. They charged for 12 hours of labor and $300 for "travel" and a $96 "fuel surcharge". When I complained about the extra charges, I was told that my ex-wife could not have her belongings until I paid and the longer I argued, the more the charges would be. When I asked for copies of all paperwork related to the move, I was told that all paperwork with on the truck with the movers. When I asked if there was any information in the computer, I was told that there was but I couldn't have a printout. I asked for detailed receipt and summary of all charges, and all I got was a list of the charges with the number of hours and hourly rate, but no breakdown of the original estimate and the extra charges added later. My ex-wife was never given an estimate in writing or any paperwork.
My ex-wife is on disability, does not work, and her only income besides my support is a small disability check. I agreed to lend her the money for the move, but she did not expect to be charged more than $2,000 for a simple move of only five miles.
