A New York based travel agency named, Maharajah Travels Inc, lures customers in via referrals, magazine ads, or newspaper ads by offering low international air travel. Targeted customers are those outside of NY state. Company requires customer to deposit funds into Bank accounts directly. Once the funds are cleared, the Company will 1) give excuses and ultimately not issue a ticket or 2) issue a ticket that was purchased with stolen credit cards; leading to disputed claims and ultimately cancellation of reservation.
This travel agency has been performing these kind of travel scams for over a decade using different names like “Consumer Wholesale Travel”, “Maharajah Travels”, and “Maharajah Shipping services”. In 2005, they were cases against the company by the New York Department of Consumer Affairs.
The travel agent performs scam as follows:
1. The traveler first contacts the agent from the local and internet ads for booking travel.
2. The agent then sends a reservation itinerary using the Sabre Virtually There reservation system.
3. The agent then requests the traveler to direct deposit check/cash into their Bank account. Several fraud bank accounts have been used such as Chase Bank, Citibank, and Bank of America.
4. The agent does not issue tickets. If they issue them they use stolen credit cards.
5. The traveler is stuck with no ticket or with ticket with issued with stolen credit card.
This company has closed doors and have fled with everyone’s money and is not returning anyone’s phone calls. This company has cheated over 100 international travelers going to India and other places and have stolen money more than $130,000. A group of affected travelers are collectively working together to take an action against this fraud travel agent. These travelers have filed complaints against the agent at local FBI offices, police departments, local Banks (Chase, Citibank, Bank of America), Sabre Holdings, and at New York Department of Consumer Affairs office. The group of travelers are seeking ways to get their money back.
