Flight from Atlanta to Washington, DC Reagan National was uneventful. Baggage didn't make the flight and Delta attempted a service recovery (delivery bag to my single family house in Northern Virginia that night or next morning, plus an extra 5000 frequent flier miles).
Things were looking good when I receive a call from Delta service provider at 11:22 PM stating that I can expect my luggage to be delivered after mid-night that night. We agree that if I leave a note on my door, the driver will leave the bag outside my door without waking me.
Fast forward to 1:43 AM that same evening. I receive a call from a Washington, DC patrol officer -- trying to understand why my luggage was found by a Washington, DC citizen in the middle of the road on MacArthur Blvd NW. Finally after a few minutes and fully awakening from my slumber, the kind patrol officer began to understand that I hadn't left the bag there and we arranged for me to leave from my house and drive to where he was in NW District of Columbia (approximately a 35 minute drive at that hour) to pick up my luggage.
I arrived home at approximately 3:15AM. Later that morning, I called the Delta toll free baggage number and was basically told, "well, you received your luggage -- there really isn't much more we can do for you. If you would like to complain contact the corporate office -- thank you for flying Delta."
This is one of the more bizarre instances of poor service I have heard or experienced. It is nice to know that the $25 dollar baggage fee is being used well to improve their baggage handling service!
Delta -- never again!
