Ready to go...it's 6:30 A.M. on Sunday morning Memorial weekend. After an extra 2 hour detour because the driver missed a turn, a fun wedding and a frightening ordeal and 3 tow trucks it is finally time to go home, with 8 children under 10, 1 pregnant woman--35 weeks, a stage 4 cancer patient on chemotherapy and a child on insulin....but there is a problem. You see it started Friday evening as we went down a country road in Virginia on the way to rehearsal dinner, the bus drifted to the edge of the road with a steep drop off, we arrived a little nervous, but happy to see our Virginia family. As we exited the bus, we asked the driver about the drive....he was quite nonchalant saying he had been thru worse. After an evening of fun we loaded the bus, to return to the hotel. Before we left guests at the party warned the driver to get closer to the bank side of the road, as they thought his ruts were dangerous. This is when trouble started....instead of hugging the bank side of the road, the bus driver was quite close to the edge and went off the road, with many of the forementioned people unable to exit unassisted and scared.---Children were evacuated out of the back of the bus window (emergency exit) and caught, while family members with tractors came to assist others, who had to be evacuated into a tractor loader and dropped to the ground. A tow truck was called on Friday evening.....followed by another tow truck on Saturday morning---and finally a Swing tow truck was brought in from 2 hours away to get the bus, which was balanced on the rear axle, lifted back on the road. (Oh by the way the bus was blocking the road to the wedding)----Oh well...finally got the bus back on the road and headed into town.....which is where our complaint takes place--- as we entered the parking lot, we were told to not get in a hurry the driver needed to talk to my uncle.....we were not allowed to get on the bus to return home, unless my uncle paid the tow truck fee of $2,500.00----this had not been mentioned until today--- "they didn't want to bother us before the wedding....."----of course it is difficult to get alternate transportation on a holiday weekend...... Finally after 2 hours of checking alternate transportation routes....my uncle desperate to get his family home agreed to pay the fee- --Just when you think the story is over----another glitch--the bus driver will not accept a personal check.....my uncle is from a small town---no debit cards-- and as everyone knows ----banks are not open on Sunday mornings! It was also "very difficult" for us to talk to anyone other than the bus driver. If we ever get started it is sure to be a "long" 17 hour drive home!--Written by the niece.
Update---after signing a paper the bus company decided to accept my uncle's chcek!---We're off---can't wait to get to Kansas----and my car!
