I have recently received a letter from Health Net, Inc.
It states that an unencrypted portable disk drive is missing from one of their offices. Information stored on the drive were scanned images covering a period from 2002 to mid-2009.
They have determined that the disk drive contains my personal information "such as your name, address, Social Security number and "protected" health and financial information."
There were 100,000 plus personal files on this disk drive according to the "Debix Identity Protection Network" agent I spoke with (Health Net is offering to pay for a 2 year membership to this service)
That would however not help us if someone uses all of this information to obtain employment with my SSN - the IRS would just demand payment without caring that I was not the person filing returns; I just saw a news exposee on a man who paid taxes for 8 years because of identity theft and the IRS did nothing to help this man out.
Also, if someone obtains false identification and commits crimes, what protection would I be offered?
I am really worried about this. I have been careful to protect personal information, now it seems to have been futile.
