I was outside working on my car in Denton, TX when this truck pulled up asking if I like steak. I said yes, since I do. He said he had some good deals on steak and asked if I would be interested. Sure. Let me see.
So he pulls his truck around, opens the tailgate and pulls out a big box of meat. He shows me all these rib-eyes, filets, etc. in individual boxes, each piece of meat vacuum sealed. They looked good. He tells me the whole box is usually something like $360 but he will let it go for half off. Too much. So I buy a box of filet mignon, 10 for $30. Great deal! He tells me this is select quality, like the kind they sell in Whole Foods. He said they sold to Whole Foods. I was sold.
So, I cook up the first batch and they were delicious. Amazing with some salt and pepper cooked medium rare. 10-12 minutes after searing and it was awesome. Me and my wife ate it. No problems.
Then, a few days later I cook up three of them for myself. One of them ended up really undercooked. It took a few hours but I ended up feeling sick around 7 that night and it steadily got worse and worse. I ended up at 5 in the morning curled around the toilet, vomiting my insides out.
My stomach felt sick for days after. That was a Thursday morning and I didn't feel like my stomach was better until Monday or Tuesday of the next week. I couldn't figure out what it was, because I had eaten some other food, too. It wasn't until I ran into other complaints online that I began to connect the two.
Now, to be fair, I did undercook the meat. Thing is, its filet mignon, its supposed to be rare and those packages are supposed to be vacuum sealed. I don't think those vacuum seals are very solid and which makes cooking these steaks to a nice and tender rare dangerous. My thoughts.
