I have recently moved to Panama City Beach, FL. I moved my Fifth Wheel Trailer into a park located on the west end of the beach. I relocated here for my health and love the area. I hired a contractor to dig out a small driveway area for me and he gave me the dimensions and had me call around and get the gravel delivered. I contacted several places both on the beach side and in Panama City. I settled on Rock World on Back Beach Road. I gave the woman on the phone (Betty) the dimensions and ask her to quote the job for me. I was informed it would take 8 tons of Florida Rock, I questioned this, she repeated the dimensions and informed me 8 tons was correct. I paid her and was told that they would deliver within an hour to hour and a half as the driver was out on a delivery at that time. I returned home and told the contractor so he stayed for the delivery until approximately 7:15pm, the delivery never showed up. I attempted calling the office several times only to receive a message that their voice mail box was full. I called the number in Panama City and left a message there. The next morning I again tried calling and finally reached Betty again at around 8:30am, she said she didn't understand the mixup in the delivery because she had written "today" on the delivery ticket, she informed me he was loading the truck then and would be right out with my rock.
When he showed up, he said it was her fault for not putting the ticket in the correct place, at this point I didn't care who was at fault, I just needed my driveway complete and my contractor had to be somewhere else until late evening. He said he threw in an additional 1,000 lbs. of rock for my inconvenience. He "dumped" the rock in 3 big piles, not attempting to spread it at all with the final load being dumped half way out in the roadway that runs through the park. I told him that looks like a LOT of rock and he told me how he has been in business for over 20+ years so I trusted he knew what he was doing (I came to find out the following Monday that this was the owner, Leslie). He left me with the rock in the road and two additional unspread mounds in the drive area.
That evening my contractor showed up and began spreading the rock which was supposed to only be 2-3 inches deep, it is over 6 inches deep in some places and there is still a mountain of rock that would fill another driveway the same size as mine. My contractor called Rock World on my behalf on Monday morning and was told that their calculations of the job were correct and that they would not make it right via a refund for overcalculating the job and they would not pick the excess rock up. My understanding is the conversation was heated resulting in my contractor hanging up the phone.
I called Betty back and ask to speak to the owner which is when I was informed that the driver who delivered at my place WAS the owner. I left a message with her for him to call me back and she assured me she would make sure he got it, even telling me she was putting a large star on the message. I waited all day Monday and did not receive a call. This morning, Tuesday, May 3rd I called Betty back and told her he never called me. She assured me she had given him the message and that his response was, I gave her extra rock and now she is complaining. I informed her that I felt I had been taken advantage of and the fact that he didn't even have the courtesy to return my call sends a message to me that he (as a business owner) doesn't care about his customer's base satisfaction.
I am turning to you in hopes that another consumer is not "cheated" and treated the way I have been. I am also filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
