Has anyone purchased black granite for a countertop, floor, or tombstone? There are reports that granite is being doctored/dyed to appear blacker, when it really is dark grey or a inferior grade. Apparently, this is a well known and contentious issue in the stone industry.
I met an elderly woman in the cemetery who received a tombstone that faded in less than two weeks with marks appearing all over it. I could clearly see grey coming through the black. She told me the company yelled at her for several weeks, then offered her money back, then sued her. They accused this grieving, elderly woman of pouring acid on the stone. Unbelievable.
I actually googled this issue, and there are plenty of reports of dyed countertops on stone industry websites. I imagine it must be expensive to rip out a kitchen because the countertops are dyed.
Has anyone else out there heard of this? Why would anyone dye a tombstone? Is there no respect for the dead? No one seems to be helping this woman, who was clearly ill and distressed. I felt guilty walking away from her not able to offer her assistance or closure in the death of her loved one. But she left an impression on me, so perhaps putting this out there will bring attention to this issue.
Shame on the granite and stone industry for not doing something to stop this. Shame on the government - apparently there are no regulations. Shame on the tombstone industry for not speaking up to help this woman. She could be your grandmother.
