My kids had a pediatrician at St. Lukes-Roosevelt hospital and had been going there for over a year. The doctor was in-network with my insurance company at the time (Connecticare) and then over a year after I changed insurance plans I am all of a sudden getting billed $241.19 each for my daughter and son for "Facility Charges." I had contacted Connecticare numerous times and they said they were investigating it and ultimately they did nothing and finally told me too much time had passed and there was nothing they could do. My kids had been going there for a year and I had never received a charge like that before. Connecticare would not tell be if their contract with St. Luke's Roosevelt allowed for such spurious billing. They were evasive and now St. Lukes is threatening me with legal action. This is unfair. This is some sort of extortion that St. Lukes is using by circumventing the insurance companies and the insurance companies are just looking the other way. I am paying over $15,000 a year for health insurance for the pleasure of being screwed by the hospitals.
This was just a simple doctors visit to the Pediatrician who happens to be in a clinic in St. Lukes Hospital. There are no signs anywhere telling you that the hospital will be charging you these fees. That clinic also caters to mostly to low and middle income people. How many other people who can't afford it are they extorting in this manner? Does this sound like anything you can do to help? It is a consumer nightmare.
