This is an explanation of the claim that I have submitted to GMC for repairs made on the power steering on my 2006, Chevy Cobalt.
After I purchased my 2006 Cobalt for my daughter I purchased an extended warranty, approximately 2 months later, through my finance company, costing me $1376.59. This was insurance for me because this car was going to be driven by my daughter back and forth to college, approximately 200 miles one way. In April of 2010 the power steering failed intermittently and then finally failed completely. I called GM corporate office to see if there was an existing recall on the car and at that time there was not. I used the extended warranty, that I purchase from an outside source, to get the car repaired. At that time the certified GM dealership, Molle M. C. of Pittsburg Kansas, ordered and installed, according to them, the only part that was available to repair my car, a Power Steering Column Module Assembly. Shortly after the repair was done I received a letter in the mail from General Motors concerning the recall of the 2006 Chevy Cobalt Power steering motor. Because I purchased the extended warranty though my financing company and not through the Chevrolet Dealership as insurance for me and not in case there was a bad design or bad part I feel I should be compensated for that portion of the warranty that I had to use for the repair, $630.32 or at a minimum for the parts purchased for the repair. If I had not had taken out the extended warranty I would have had to pay the $630.32 and would have expected a full refund. Since the repair and since submitting this claim my daughter has taken the car back to Molle M. C. and has had it inspected to the warranty requirements.
Over the past few months I have contacted GMC customer service about receiving a refund. I have talked to Gabriel #11189 and Jeff #11214 and have been told that the repair that the certified dealership made was outside the scope of the recall and due to my extended warranty that I was not really out any money. As a reminder the power steering motor is part of the Power Steering Column Assembly and I am out the $1376.59 I paid for the extended warranty. Because the dealership told me that the failure was my power steering motor and because I have been told by the certified dealership, twice, that the part installed was the only available part at the time to repair my car I strongly disagree with the decision to deny my claim.
