Kars4Kids Complaint

Get stuck with a BIG bill for donating your car to Kars4Kids! - Not for profit organization

- California - Lakewood, NJ
Hi,

I am writing because I would like your help in fixing something that is very wrong. It started with a simple donation of a passenger car to an organization called Kars4Kids. I found them online and seemed like a reputable and sizaeble organization. They are based in NJ but are able to accept car donations in 48 states. I wanted to donate to that organization because I specifically wanted the proceeds to help children.

I called to donate my car and they arranged for a tow company to come and pick up the car. They tow all donated cars, whether running or not. I think it has something to do with liability issues. I filed a release of liability with the DMV and thought everything was good.

Weeks later I receive a notice that the car I donated received a parking ticket for parking somewhere that it shouldn't be parked and I receive a notice that the car was towed from where it was parked. Obviously left there by the organization that picked up the car from me. The organization never filed paperwork to claim ownership of the car so the DMV doesn't show Kars4Kids as the party responsible for the vehicle.

I called the towing company and explained that I donated the vehicle and filed the release of liability with the DMV some time ago and faxed them copies of the paperwork showing that information. The towing company didn't care and continued to pursue me for payment.

I refused to pay since it was not my obligation to pay. I've already donated the car to Kars4Kids and filed the release of liability. The towing company eventually sent it to collection and now it's a big black mark on my credit report.

I can't believe that an organization that is suppose to be helping people ended up hurting all that is involved. The children didn't benefit from the proceeds that would have been received from the sale of this car and I was harassed by a company for amounts I didn't owe and my credit was dinged for amounts I didn't owe because Kars4Kids acted irresponsibly and did something it wasn't suppose to.

Now I am spending time to try and clear this up with the collection agency who is also very reluctant to help.

Please help me! Thanks!

Didnt the tow company that came to pick up the car from you give you any paper work?
They should have given you a receipt showing they took posession of the vehicle and it should have shown who they were contracted with to tow the car and where they were to tow it...they would need such paperwork to show that the vehicle was not stolen...
You need to take all your paper work and a copy of the DMV release, along with the bill from the tow company to an attorney and have the attorney go over your state laws and contact the tow company. If you have a release from DMV then you are not responsible for what happened to the car after it left your property....The attorney should be able to clear up your problems with the tow company and credit agency....
Then after you get everything cleared by the attorney, you take all that paper work plus all the paper work from Kars4Kids that you have and file a lawsuit against their company for all your expenses and damages...

Contact the BBB and file a complaint and then contact the IRS website and check to see if Kars4Kids is licensed and registered as a non-profit organization and does have a 501 status...
If they do not then file a complaint with the IRS for a fraudulent charity.then Contact your local district attorneys office and file another complaint for fraud..
Since this organization deals with the interstate transport of vehicles any fraudulent acts done by them concerning donated vehicles could be classed as felonies..
Next time do not donate any vehicles, just sell them outright or sell them to a salvage yard then take the cash and donate it to a well known chariity....
You can always check online with WWW.IRS.GOV and search any charity that has a 501 non-profit status...you can also check onlin with the BBB better business bureau)most all trusted charities are members...

I have an identical story. I donated a boat two years ago and now have a storage bill for $2,500 because they never transferred title and somebody used the boat and then abandoned it. I have a lien now and they won't return my phone calls or take care of this. What can I do?
