General Motors and Explorer Conversion Van Complaint

Oversized tires and tie rod problems can be fatal - Tie rod replacement at 15000, 30000 and 45000 miles

- Melbourne Fla.
We purchased a new 2005 Chevy Explorer conversion van from a Chevrolet dealer in NY. The van was delivered to me as is today. We chose from a suggested list the up grades on the list given us. a Chevy dealer has replaced the tie rods three times. I keep asking why is this happening? No one has given me an answer until I wrote to GM. Now all of a sudden they say they will not repair it any longer as they THINK it's due to the oversized tires which is not their problem. GMC produces these van under a YF7 uplifter package for conversion use only. They send them to Explorer who in turn does the conversion and sends it on to the Selling Dealer. If not for regular 3000 mile service and my lifetime alignment we would not be aware of the problem. I have two friends who died in an accident when a tie rod broke.

A GMC Explorer service man for EXPLORER told me he has seen the problem and has replaced the tie rods with MOOG tie rods and the problem came back again. He also said GMC is well aware of the problem. Why then aren't they willing to finally correct this problem?

I own a 2005 GMC Explorer Conversion Van and am experiencing the same issues. My GMC dealer has commented that the Tie Rod end replacement parts have a 10,000 mile warranty on them and has suggested bringing the van back in before the 10k mark in case they are in need of replacing - which the probably will be.

I have similar issues with a 07 chevy explorer van. I noticed the tires were wearing out too soon. So after replacing a few I was told that The hub bearing on front driver side had to be replaced. I replaced that unit 4 times til they got one that could hold the weight. The rims that came with the van are 20" and I noticed that the tire size was not holding the weight so I bought a extra load tire package of a similar size. about half an inch taller. I haved had the ball joints replaced and tie rods replaced befor the tires so now that I am aligning it they seem to have trouble getting it done. Anyone out there with similar problems. My family uses this van and I would like to get it working the way it is supposed to.
