I have had a Fifth Third Bank account for over 25 years but did not have a credit card through them. Several months ago I received a offer for a "Platinum Master Card" from them. I applied and was issued the "Platinum Master Card". I quit using one of my other cards and started using this one on occasions. I already had a debit card from Fifth Third and also use it occasionally. I have direct deposit to my bank account every two weeks and have a good idea of the funds available. I would use my master card when I thought my checking account might be low. Last week I received several "Overdraft Notices". When I checked my account online I discovered that whenever I used my "Platinum Master Card" the charge was directly debited from my checking account. I printed my statements went to the nearest office and complained. The Manager took my complaint and promised to look into it and call me; which he did the next day. I was advised that I had selected to use my card this way at the time of purchase. This is not the case. Further it should not even be possible.
I have two cards for two distinctly different purposes. This drained my checking account without my knowledge and then charged me a $33.00 overdraft fee every time I used my credit card. I deposited funds from my Credit Union to cover everything the same day I opened the first notice limiting the fees to $166.00. Fifth Third Bank has refused to reverse the charges essentially saying it was my fault. Although the Bank Manager assured me my "Platinum Master Card" was a credit card not a debit card. If Fifth Third had reversed the charges I could have accepted this as a mistake of some sort.
I now suspect it may be a scheme to defraud the public. Years ago I had a credit card that offered overdraft protection. Now they have turned that idea upside down.
