I received a recorded phone call today (2-25-09) on my home landline from a company calling themselves "Credit Services" (very vague). The purpose of this automated call was to offer me a lower interest rate on my credit card (very vague). The recording said "they had been trying to reach me and this was my final offer to respond." I was amazed to be receiving a call such as this since we have an unpublished phone number. The message proceeded to tell me to "Press 1 to speak with a representative" so I did. When the representative answered the phone, I could hear a lot of other conversations in the background ( i.e. call center). The lady who answered asked if I was calling about lowering my credit card rates .... I responded no, that I was trying to figure out how they got my phone number when it is unlisted! The lady did not respond and hung up on me! The phone number listed on my caller ID was 904-259-4351. When I tried to call back, I received a recorded message that said "This number has been disconnected and is no longer in service." I WAS SHOCKED!
I took it a step further and did a Reverse Phone # look-up on the Anywho site online. When I entered the phone number (904-259-4351) it indicated this number belonged to two different individuals in Macclenny Florida. It appears these folks had possessed this phone number early on, had the number disconnected, and now this bogus "credit company" had figured out a way to display the defunct phone number on the caller id!! UNBELIEVABLE.
Just wanted to pass on to any/everyone out there that this scam is taking place. Would hate to see an innocent person be taken advantage of. Someone could give out their personal information to this sham of a company and have their credit ruined, unauthorized charges made to their credit card(s) or even have money stolen from their bank account.
This is the first time I have encountered something like this. No legitimate company would hang up like this and obviously would not be using some system to give out fake phone numbers on the caller id. CONSUMER BEWARE!!
