Paid $279 to ship a box to Buenos Aires in May where the contents included underwear, moccasins, cookies, and a used sweatshirt I wanted a friend to have in Argentina. I asked the clerk what the content detail with value was about and she said it was for insurance purposes. When the box arrived in Argentina, my friend there was told he owed $236 in tariffs and taxes and could not afford to pay it. I called Fed Ex and requested that they return the box to me and I would deliver it in June when I returned to Buenos Aires. I asked to speak with an international shipping operator to have a price quote of what it would cost to have the box returned to me. I was told explicitly that the cost was $17. Within 24 hours, Fed Ex called me and said it would cost another $279 to return the box and that I had to pay the tariffs and taxes in Argentina as well that would cost me an additional $236. I clearly explained that one of their operators told me $17 for a return fee and I expected them to stick to that. I added that there was never a mention by that operator that I needed to pay the tariffs and taxes if I was having the box returned. Today I received a collection notice by a New Jersey company representing Fed Ex for the $236. I called the collection agency number and it would not connect twice. I then called Fed Ex and asked where the box was and they said it was destroyed. This is absolutely outrageous and they still expect me to pay the $236 for tariffs and taxes in Argentina. I don't mind paying that amount; but, I want my property back! I'm very angry that I've been lied to twice by Fed Ex, being held accountable for additional costs, and then to be told that my box has been destroyed is insane. I'm a CFO who practices the best in business principles. Fed Ex should be ashamed for conducting such business with customers.
