On 7/7/07 we had Expo 2000,1934 Waukegan Road, Glenview, IL 60025, come out to quote on our 12' patio door, 5' patio door and 2 sliding windows. The representative from Expo 2000 was [name removed], Director of Sales. Dan spent over 30 minutes going over their product and company. This included: a 40% Fuel Savings Pledge, "Exclusive" Lifetime Warranty, Customer Referral Program, and Energy Star Tax Credit and a quote for $13,632 minus $4093 = our sale price of $9539.
Right at that point my wife and I told [name removed] that he was extremely high, that we had quotes for $6000 and have a nice day.
[name removed] said he was going to discuss this with [name removed] his owner and get back to us. Obviously something was wrong.
On 7/13/07 Dan called me on my cell phone and said he had talked to Gary his company owner and Gary had called the window manufacture Thermal Industries and got their pricing straightened out. He said he would match the $6000 price including all their benefits (listed above) and we could have the vinyl wood finish interior at no charge.
I said we had just gone with another company but they didn't have the lifetime warranty so maybe we would go with Expo 2000. Dan said he would draw up a contract and come by Saturday around noon. I called the other window company and discussed the situation. This gentleman was willing to meet the lifetime warranty and even went down to $5900. I knew Dan was coming by so I called him Saturday, got his voicemail, so I left him a message saying the competition met the lifetime warranty so we were going with them. Dan called and left me a voicemail saying he would go to $5900 and don't forget the vinyl wood finish inside. He left the contract by my entry phone in our lobby.
I did not call Dan back at that point. Then while I was having dinner at a restaurant with my family Sunday night I got a text message on my phone from Dan saying he was dropping the price to $5300 yes another $600 savings. I showed my wife and we thought what's going on here. Once again I did not call Dan back. Now the following day Dan called my cell phone again. I could not answer at the time so he left me a message saying "what can you do with a thousand dollars" I will go down to $5000 but I must hear from you today. I was very leery at this point but I talked with my wife and even thou it sounded too good to be true we scheduled for Dan to come back out 7/16/07. We signed the contract with him and gave him a check for $500. Dan said we would be hearing from Andy his measuring guy and then the windows would be ordered. I then canceled the contract with the other window company.
On 7/25/07 after not hearing from Andy and noticing my check had not been cashed I called Expo 2000 and asked for Dan. The girl that answered the phone said he was not there so I inquired about my check. She said she would have someone call me the next day. When I didn't hear from anyone by 10:30am I called and was given [name removed], General Manger. Larry told me that they had not seen Dan in some time that he had family issues and they did not have my check or contract. He assured me that Dan was a long time employee and that everything would be straightened out. He asked me to fax over a copy of my contract, which I did. I called Larry the next day Friday 7/27/07. Larry said he was sending Andy out to measure.
The next day Saturday 7/28/07 Andy called me and came out and measured all my sliding doors and windows. I tried to give him a legal size copy of the contract for Larry but he left it in my kitchen.
I finally got a call from Larry on Wednesday 8/1/07 saying my sliding door in my living room wasn't 12'and had to be a custom door. He said it would probably cost more and that the $5000 price would go up.
I came home and measured the door myself. Each of the 3 panels was 48". The overall outside dimension was 145.5. I call Larry and told him this and he said Andy had been with them for 20 years and he knew what he was doing. I explained that his competition had installed over 15 to 20 units in both of our buildings and there were no custom doors. At that point Larry said you should probably go with them. I said sure you just don't want to honor this price because your sales guy compromised your profit. The conversation was getting heated so I hung up on Larry. I did call and talk to [name removed] the owner Friday 8/3/07 and told him I was displeased with this situation and he said he has talked with Thermal Industries and that the custom door was going to cost his twice the normal price. I told him that this door was a 12' door and was not custom. He reiterated that Andy had been with them 20 years and knew how to measure. But, Gary said he would have Andy come out again and re-measure.
I have not heard from Andy and it is 8/7/07.
So, to summarize, Dan started at $9539 and whittled his price to $5000. Wasted 4 weeks of our time to find out that Expo 2000 had no intension of honoring this price. They even went so far as to tell us this 12’ patio door is a custom size when it is not. This will now cost us $900 more to go with the competition.
This “Director of Sales” [name removed] is the most unscrupulous sales person we have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.
