My husband(80) and I (72) are usually in Florida in our RV during the winter but this year he had to have some melonoma spots removed and use cream that he has to stay out of the sun while using and I had to have knee surgery. We have been RVing for the last 10 years. My husband wrecked our Saturn Vue the Friday after Thanksgiving. To make matters worse it was totaled and we didn't have rental car coverage on our insurance. So finding a new car was top priority. Using our computer we settled on the Chevy Equinox and went about test driving them to see if we liked them. We were looking for an 08' because that was what was in the budget. We have an Edmunds guide for 08' that told us the cars that can be towed four wheels on the ground behind the RV and the Equinox was one of them. We went to Century 3 Chevrolet and drove a 09' Equinox and promptly asked the salesman if this could be towed like the 08' Equinox. "Sure" was the salesman's reply... we also asked "does it accumulate miles when it is towed four wheels on the ground?" The salesman said " I'm not sure." We asked for the manuals but he said they were with the car. Of course we expected the Chevy dealer's salesman to know the product he represents. We bought the 09'Chevy Equinox on 12-17-09 at 8:00 pm. We were excited... we dropped off our rental car and took our new to us vehicle home. Next morning we got out the manuals to see how to work the remote starter feature on the car as we couldn't work it the night before and proceeded to look up the towing instructions as the snow is coming and maybe we could get to Florida in January after Christmas. The manual said this vehicle cannot be towed four wheels on the ground and we don't have a trailer. A trailer would really make our RV long and we have never driven it that way. We called the manufacturer and gave GM our VIN # and they confirmed this car cannot be towed. Shocked we called the dealership and spoke to the salesmanager. He said he would call us back. My daughter informed us of a huge snowstorm on the way and we didn't want to have this car and try to get it back in bad weather. We went back to the rental car company and got a car and proceeded down to the Dealership. It was 12-18-09 at 7:00 pm less than 24 hrs and less than 100 miles on the car later. The sales manager told us we could not return the car and threatened to tow the car to back to our house. I pleaded with him to just keep it there and talk to the general manager and we could settle it the next day as neither the GM nor the salesman was there that night. He agreed and we left the car there. The GM then called us on Saturday 12-19-09 and told us most certainly the car could be towed and he would send us the papers to prove it. We told him to check with GM but according to the manufacturer it could not be towed. Suffice to say he called back and told us we were right but that the salesman never told us that the car could be towed and that we own the car and they would not help and if we didn't come to get the car they would tow it to our home and/or charge us storage fees. We have tried everything... they will not unwind this deal. We have stopped our check but are terrified to buy anything else as we can't afford two cars. All attempts to resolve this amicalbly have failed and they are just bullying us. At Christmas no less! We all just helped bail out the car companies and this is how they do business... lying and bullying the customer. Ebenezer Scrooge lives and he runs a car dealership now. In going on line and checking reviews for this dealership they have countless complaints about them for strong arm tactics. What is a older couple to do?
