A rash of hacked e-mails, not just account names, etc. but actual private e-mails, have been done in San Diego area recently (Feb. 20th- current). The company, LinkedIn, intercepts an e-mail and uses it's private and personal information to "suck someone in" to use their site, generating more users, hits and money.
They use personal names, info, etc. taken from an e-mail and "personalize" their e-mail to the targeted e-mail recipient with that info, resembling a common letter from one person to the other asking them to join this company and go to their website!
It's basically the internet version of phone tapping! Which, of course, is illegal, thus, so should this! We don't see a site for the FCC to file complaints of this sort and I don't know who would regulate and control this type of personalized hacking.
Having pop-ups at a site you intentionally went to is one thing, having some company rip-off your own personal e-mails and use them against you or someone else is a really serious scam.
They even include stuff like one's "pet name," nickname (only known to the other party to which the communication as intended for), etc. they stole from the e-mail! This is getting really aggressive for a marketing plan! I know the economy is tough but.....
