Direct TV Complaint

Direct Tv misleads you - Satelite dish

- San Diego
A couple of months ago I called DTV, I was interested in receiving service from them. But I didn't want to be in a contract. The representative told me that direct TV "does not" have contracts. I decided to go ahead an order service from them. A couple of months latter I call and want to get HD programming, they tell me with it'll cost $200.00 and I will be in a binding contract with them for two years. I decline and decide to go with another carrier. When I call to cancel my service with Direct TV, I am told I will be billed an early cancellation fee. I was shocked I was never told I was in a contract. When I was able to get through one of the supervisors I told him I was not aware I was in a contract, I told him that I had asked and I had been told " was not in a contract."

Well the supervisor has the audacity to tell me the representative was right "there is no contract its called an agreement." One by the way that I didn't even know about. No latter was sent out, no email, and no one told me anything. Now two months latter I have been billed $215.00 for unreturned equipment.

I have yet to receive the shipping box. Direct TV is a thief!!!

I am in the process of a similar dispute with Direct TV. They sent out a mailer in the fall offering "no contract" service with a higher monthly fee. I ordered the HDTV service. When they came to install it I asked again if it was truly a no contract agreement. The service man assured me it was because of the higher monthly fee. After he installed the service, I noticed I didn't have an HDTV box, and he told me I had too much shade and couldn't get HDTV. I was upset and told him he should have told me before he installed it. He suggested I get some "rabbit ears" from WalMart and if I wasn't happy he reminded me I didn't have a contract. I went to WelMart and purchased the rabbit ears but they did not work, so the next morning I called Direct TV, explained what happened and asked again if I was really free to cancel at any time or was there a "window" following which I was obligated to a period of time for their service. He assured me there was not window and I could cancel at any time. About five months later my equipment began failing and I was told that my warrenty on the equipment was only for 30 days and therefore I would need to pay someone to repair it. I told them that since I did not have a contract and they had not given me the HDTV service I originally requested, I was canceling the service. I ordered service from a cable company. About a month later I began receiving bills from Direct TV for over $300 for early termination. Following repeated conversations with the company, I was finally told that on my first bill there was a statement on the back of the bill that said by paying this bill I was now committed to a contract and that waved any other offer. I explained that I had been told there was not window and that they had not been honest with me. I refused to pay the bill and they have referred me to a collection agency. I am very frustrated and feel that by paying them the $300 I am allowing them to get away with this kind of dishonest practice.
