Desert Toyota of Las Vegas, NV Complaint

Auto service paid for but not done. Oversight or Fraud?

On 7/15/2006, we were passing through LV from California, on a long cross country trip. My Avalon was due for the 5,000 mile service so we dropped it off at Desert Toyota. This was for a simple oil change and tire rotation. We paid for the services and were on our way.

Several hundred miles later, the "Service auto" light came on. I called Desert Toyota and spoke to the service manager who talked me through the process of resetting it. It was many miles later that it occurred to me to look at the dip stick and sure enough the oil had not been changed. The oil was definitely atypically filthy for a Toyota. You get several thousand miles before the oil even starts to discolor appreciably in a Toyota engine.

Anyway, I never called Toyota on it and as I indicated, it may have been an oversight so this is just a buyer beware type warning. Now, I check the oil myself before leaving the premises of any dealer.

Just a clarification to my post. I took the date from our credit card statement. July 15th was when the transaction posted. The actual service must have been a day or two earlier.

Why do cars in America have to have their oil changed every 3000, while in Europe the same cars service requirements are three times that?

I'm right there with you vulgata... I only take my car in every 6,000 miles here in the US... even though they tell me 3,000 every time. It is a ploy to get more business in my opinion...

Check consumer reports. Some time ago, they did a complete oil change experiment with New York Cabs where some had their oli change every 3,000 miles and others went much further. Engine teardowns didn't show any difference to my recollection.
