Child Care That Doesn't Care About Children

- Arlington
The Summer Camp program provided by the YMCA of Arlington is a poorly run program. The counselors show no knowledge of child development and behavior or the patience to work with children with disabilities. My eight year old son has Tourettes Syndrome, a condition recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act. They YMCA was informed of this diagnosis when he was enrolled as well as the fact that he has a 504 accommodation plan with the Mansfield ISD. The counselors at the camp have refused to assist my son when he has had problems with other children and have even gone so far as to tell him that they don't care and that he needs to go away and leave them alone. I have brought these responses to the attention of the on site Camp Director as well as to the attention of the YMCA Childcare Director. I was told them would do some research and get back with me - no return phone call has been made. Their idea of appropriate punishment for misbehaving is a three day suspension. Obviously this causes great problems to the working parents that use their services as child care during the summer months. I have been greatly displeased with the level of service and response provided by the YMCA. I will never enroll my children in their program again and will make sure I tell friends and family of the negative experience I've had with the YMCA of Arlington Summer Programs.
