I am writing with a consumer concern with the motor company Chrysler. My husband and I bought in last month (April 2011) a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country. We just had a baby (3 months now) and this van is perfect size for our family to grow in to.
We just took our first road trip to South Carolina to visit the Grandparents and while in South Carolina our van literally shut off while we were driving TWICE. The first time we were pulling out of a drive way and thought the car had just stalled and we put it in park and restarted it. The second time my husband was driving down the road and as he turned a corner the whole car shut off again. He pulled to the side of the road putting it in neutral and almost ended up in a ditch! Again he put it in park (after the car stopped) and then restarted it.
When he got home we googled this concern "2010 Chrysler Town and Country shutting off while driving" and found numerous articles and concerns about this! Initially we contacted our dealer that sold it to us because all articles are saying that there is a recall on our vehicle for this problem. Our dealership however, had no information on any recall. We were advised to contact Chrysler and they too said they have no information on any recall and we needed to bring it to a dealership to be diagnosed.
Meanwhile, our vacation had ended and we need to get home so my husband could get back to work. We have had to rent a car to drive home as we were even advised not to drive the vehicle.
Now, the car has been inspected by the service department and they are saying there are no problems nor computer codes showing the car shut off while driving. They said the car is fine and is okay to drive.
However, going back to all the articles I have found about a recall, I contacted the National Highway Safety Patrol and they had all the information about a recall about to take place. Again I contacted back customer service of Chrysler and the girl found the recall number and information but yet it has not been put into effect or the Chrysler system for the dealers to see.
So basically Chrysler is well aware of this very dangerous safety issue. Has all indications of recall going to take place for this exact problem I have described, but want me to take my car back until "there is a recall on my car". So I should drive it home with my family from South Carolina to Florida in hopes that the car doesn't decide to shut off while on the highway going 70 mph?? But then in a month they may recall this issue?
I am upset because this is exactly what Toyota went in front of congress about. They KNEW of a problem with their vehicles but did not react. And are we just going to wait till there are fatalities to really react? I do not feel comfortable knowing the amount of other people having the same problem, and knowing that they are aware of the problem that the service people have a solution but I am supposed to drive my car around with my new baby hoping it doesn't decide to just shut off.
Please help. Thank you
