I tried to closed my credit card account with Capital One Bank. After three or four months and a useless complaint with the Banking Commission, the account was finally closed.
If you like to argue, fight with people over the telephone, be told lies, then try to close your account too and you won't be disappointed.
Posted by attnycb on 09/07/2007 I had the exact same experience with Capital One. Supposedly, you cannot close your account until "30 days passes since your last transaction." Unfortunately, even calling to check on the status of your account seems to constitute a "transaction"! It took me approximately 3 years to finally (after about 8 phone calls and two letters) close my Capital One account.
Posted by paulorcutt on 01/27/2010 I had the same experience today when I finally had to get involved in my 20 year old son's account. He "closed" his account due to ongoing unauthorized charges four months ago. Capital One made him pay the disputed charges, and continued to allow the same companies to bill his account after he requested the account be closed.
After several hours worth of calls to India today, I was told Capital One will not close an account until the balance was paid in full. I finally demanded to speak with a representative in the United States who closed the account, and reversed a few of the late fees.
