My father passed away August 6 of this year in South Africa. Prior to his death, my fiance and I had purchased tickets from South African Airways to visit my parents in South Africa from September 13 to 27th.
When it was clear my father was terminally ill, I made an urgent inquiry about a refund for the tickets from SAA, so that we could leave immediately. Despite repeated attempts to follow up and find out the status of my inquiry I got no response. I only discovered, by checking my credit card online, that, without consultation or permission from me, my tickets were cancelled, no refund given, as the tickets were “non-refundable” and the taxes and fees associated with the tickets credited back to my account. In trying to find out what was going on, I postponed leaving for South Africa till August 5th and arrived only after his death. I was deprived of the opportunity to even say goodbye to my father. I could only stay 1 week due to uncertainty over the original tickets, thus unable to be there for my mother. The emotional and family conflicts continue to reverberate!
I was left with no tickets and they kept my money. In their response to my disputing the charge with my credit card company, they falsely claimed I had cancelled the tickets!
