Blau Plumbing/Wrench & Rooter Complaint

Plumbing/Home Improvement Scam - Plumbing

- Milwaukee (Blau) & Wrench & Rooter (Madison, WI)
I called Blau Plumbing (Wrench & Rooter, located in Madison came to my house (they are a division of Blau Plumbing which is actually in the Milwaukee area) in November 2006 from the Yellow Pages in the Madison, WI phone book because of a suspected leak under one of my sinks. It was a Saturday. A plumber came to my home and my sister and I (she lives with me) chatted with him at some length about general plumbing topics. In the course of looking for a source of the leak, he noticed that my gas water heater and water softener were quite old. They were fine in working condition and I have had not had any unusual problems with them in the almost 30 years I have lived in my home.

The technician started to warn me about the possibility of the water heater (it could blow up, among other things). I had not called him about a water heater or a water softener, but because of what he said, and the fact the he could replace them "right now" I was enticed to sign a contract. I had never checked on any pricing for water heaters or water softeners but thinking that the prices were very high, he told me that their pricing was "middle of the road". The work was done immediately, and within two days I decided that this was not what I wanted.

I called Blau Plumbing mentioning the 3-day right of refusal and was told that it did not apply in cases like this. They left absolutely nothing with me that Saturday about the 3-day right of refusal, which they State says is the law. I filed a complaint with the State and contacted the Better Business Bureau in Milwaukee but there has been no resolution in almost a year.

In the meantime, I am making payments for these unwanted appliances in order to keep my good credit rating. I am paying over $4,100 for these to appliances. My complaint states that I want them removed so I can deal with a reputable, fair company. I am willing to go without hot water or soft water until I can get new appliances installed. The State has issued a warning letter to the company that they had broken several laws, especially about the lack of information about a 3-day right to cancel. I received no information about that subject on the day this took place.

The company has a well-known Madison law firm handling my complaint with the State. I don't have an attorney and am very intimidated by all of this. This law firm has not responded to the warning letter that the State sent to them quite awhile ago. I think they think I will just "go away".

Everything is at a stand still and I am making absolutely no progress is getting this resolved. They conned me into signing the contact with false information and will not do anything about getting this equipment removed and giving me my money back. I called for a possible plumbing leak (never found) and and was instead solicited and enticed by false information by this company for equipment I did not need or want.

I can't believe that they had a truck close by with a water heater and water softener that could be installed immediately that day !! (Contract also says it is a 50 gallon water heater and the water heater has a marking on it that it is a 48 gallon). AARP or the Better Business Bureau have been of no help either. Why should I need to spend more money because of this - this company was wrong in soliciting me - I only called them because of the suspected water leak. Please help me to get my money back and inform the public about this company and their tactics !!

I found this complaint searching the internet for "Complaints about Blau Plumbing". Let me share a recent experience (12/01/08). On Sunday, Nov 30, my well pump seemed to be going bad - we had very low pressure and I could hear water flowing back into the well when I shut off the power. I called Blau on Monday and they sent a plumber to my house and he arrived at noon. I immediately had to pay $65 for him to show up and another $65 every 1/4 hour for him to diagnose the problem, which I do not have a problem with.

However, there was really no diagnosis and within 15 minutes the plumber told me I needed a new pump and the cost was $5400. He also told me about a new pump design that would be a $2500 add-on but the pump would be much more efficient, would last longer and would eliminate the need to have a large pressure tank. I thought the price was high but agreed to it because I did not have water and had no reference point to know how much well pumps cost to replace. And, he told me I would have water by that evening.

He left and the "workers" showed up. After about an hour they knocked on my door and told me the pump was frozen in the pipe and it would require digging down below the pump, cutting the pipe and welding a new section onto it. I would be able to have water by the next night. The cost to dig, cut and weld was $12,000. Again, having no reference point and needing to have water I agreed to the contract, changed my mind on the $2500 upgrade and paid $17,500 to have the work done the next day.
Later that evening, I made a couple of calls to friends about the cost of this job and every single one told me that was way too high and completely outrageous. Someone referred me to a local pump company and I phoned them, the owner answered the phone (at 9:00 in the evening). He concurred that the price was outrageous and pump replacement should run about $2000. He also had a job with a pump frozen in the pipe and had to dig, cut below the pump then weld the pipe....everything Blau said they had to do. His price was $5900 for that job but only because according to him, "everything was very screwed up".
I called Blau and cancelled the service order that was scheduled for the next day. Fortunately I was able to act before it was too late otherwise I would have way overpaid.
