private un employed -contractor soliciting jobs Complaint

Beware of scammers knocking on the door... - carport

- 1450 W. Taylor St. - Chicago, Il. 60607
To whom it may Concern: I am 69 years old and apparently very gullible.(I'd like to take people at their word.) Especially, one who by all appearances needed to be working. I was staying at my son's home in Itasca, Il. when the doorbell rang and a man and his son began soliciting me for drive-way improvement. I immediately thought about a problem that I have had for two years. I wanted to help and said that I had a building in the city that needed some work on the carport lot as it was lower than the neighbors and was a catch-all for rain and melting snow in the winter...He went to the site and told me that he would be able to rectify the problem at the cost of $950.00. I took him at his word. Upon arriving at the site, he became agitated at my tenant who was questing his handywork. He then talked me into paying him as my tenant and I were not professionals and that he would stand by his work and refund my money if I were not happy with the work... It was suspicious that he asked that the check be made out to a different name. I suppose that is another issue... Well, I am not satisfied with the job, it is in no way shape or form a remedy for the problem. I began calling him at the telephone number that he had written down. I expressed that I felt that I had been ripped off. He and the son began yelling that anyone who told me that the job was inferior and a total scam did not know what they were talking about. I told him that I felt that he should refund my money minus what he spent on blacktop. He agreed and told me that he would mail me a money order. Just give it a couple of days... Then he said he would be in the neighborhood over the weekend and give me cash. Guess what? No sight of him...After several telephone calls, lying by his son and himself he just ignored further calls. Do I have any recourse? Is there any way that I can be reimbursed by this person who misrepresented himself as a certified mason who had worked in that profession for many years.... .... Is there an ordinance in the suburbs guarding against unsolicited disturbances? I am on social security and can not afford the loss. Thank you for the time... Betty Ferro
