The credit card companies have an agreement with hotel chains that once a person has checked into their room, they have 20 minutes or less and then the charge goes through and cannot be reversed or disputed.
It was our last night after two week vacation and we stopped after driving 10 hours. one hour after check in at the only hotel with a vacancy, we found our toilet and shower backed up. They gave my husband a plunger and we asked for another room, but they said there were none. We worked on their drains for over 2 hours. We informed them and they offered a drain snake. They had no maintenance man and offered to try to reach one after 11:30pm. We had kids sleeping by that time. We were all forced to use their office bathroom to wash and go to the restroom, going down stairs and through their lobby and breakfast room in our pajamas. The owner refused to give his name and argued with us. The bank informed us that because we were there longer than 20 minutes, we cannot dispute the charge. We cannot even get a partial refund and have no recourse. The Wyndham company offered a check but then started asking the same questions again about the problem and it appears we won't get any apology or acknowledgement. This is dangerous and makes no sense that a hotel would give their customers plumbing tools to clean out their drains. We should be charging them.
Beware of this and when checking into any hotel, have them go to the room with you and run all faucets, flush and use drains, and turn on each appliance before you check in!
